I expect the COVID19 deaths to pick up momentum in Texas the first week in July. Then they’ll really get going. The Texas GOP plans a big convention in Houston July 16-18. That should be interesting.

Time to remind all: Plant something edible!

You can plant Fall veggies such as beets, turnips, some types of beans, etc. right now and you will get some calories out of your crop.

I made a LOT of mistakes this Spring. Was in a hurry to get seeds in the ground, so I did not remove all the grass and weeds. Weeds are taking over in most of the garden.

Yet, it produces.

I am getting about 20 lbs. of veggies/day. Peak production in August-Sept. will probably be 100-150 lbs./day.

Cucuzza, melons, and cuke vines are choking out the weeds and grass in some areas.

Lessons learned:

1. Kill all grass and weeds FIRST. I broke the ground for my latest garden patch with my backhoe, removed roots, fertilized, and covered with tarps. No grass or weeds now.

2. Buy QUALITY seed. The difference between most seed and the ones I purchased from Park Seed is dramatic. Almost 100% germination and healthy plants. Crap seeds are not worth planting.

3. If you don't have good soil, BUY some. I got 21 cubic yards, a big investment. Paid off. No shortage of garden soil or fertilizer at this time.

4. Organic is great, but sometimes you gotta kill bugs or they will eat your crops. Neem oil seems to be non-toxic to humans.

Ideally, you will use livestock in synergy with your crops. I fed cows in my front yard for two months before I planted. It worked. They ate everything to the ground and fertilized it nicely. Some are in the deep freezer now.

Putting chickens in there to complete the clean up while fertilizing would have been even better. However, the fences were not adequate to contain the chickens at that time.

Have been re-reading Gardening When It Counts by Solomon and treating it as my bible of gardening. Have learned so much I need to start a thread on it.
