If these variants take hold and cause re-infections of the infected/vaccinated, it will be India/Brazil in California, UK and New York. Through our airports and travelling across our borders, tens of thousands of infected people are pouring in. All it takes is one vicious variant. I am sorry Wordsie, California is nowhere near herd immunity and could suffer a devastating third wave.

Israel seems to be doing pretty damn good at 60%. And remembering way back to the early days when there were uncontrolled outbreaks in prisons, they seemed to stop around 60% as well.

UK variant is not of concern. It's already everywhere here, especially michigan where cases are now going down.

SA variant is also a joke. Take a look at SA, they are doing better than any US state.

Current vaccines have at least some effect of SA and Brazil variants.

And the Moderna vaccine was created in 2 days. They already have ones targeting the new variants in trials, it's just a matter of time before they are approved.

Sure, Brazil and Indian variants are worse. But Brazil and India are also shit holes.

Today a story has been going around about a cluster of B.1.617 cases in Israel. This is the India-associated strain.

Unfortunately, this is in some places being spun as a possible example of vaccine escape. But the numbers suggest exactly the opposite!

I wonder if the maff is hurd club jumped in this one. Because the math is showing the vaccine is crushing the "Indian" super, duper, killer godzilla mutation.

Approximately 85% of the adult population in Israel has been fully vaccinated. So what does this tell us about vaccine effectiveness against B.1.617 in adults?

I'll just do point estimates.

Assume the 5 children were <16 and thus unvaccinated.

That gives us 32 cases among unvaccinated adults, and 4 cases among vaccinated adults.

The basic calculation for effectiveness then gives us a remarkable 98% against B.1.617.
