Re: Today I learned that not everyone has an internal monologue
Yep, scary shit.

I've asked several people if they can hear their own voice in their heads when they think/reason and they looked at me like I was insane.

Crazy.
 Quoting: BFD

Yeah I ask this of friends and family members several years ago, ( it was brought up in another thread) and I was surprised how many said no.

Without this internal monologue how is forethought even possible?
 Quoting: BBQ BOY™

It's not.

These people aren't taking note of anything.

Re: Today I learned that not everyone has an internal monologue
I’ve watched and written two full feature movies in my head over the years, but don’t have the connections to get them made.

When I have the time, like on the treadmill, I will imagine different scenes( full visual and dialogue) and decide how each scene will work in the script. I hear the dialogue and change the lines the action, like I am the writer director and cinematographer at all times.

Isn’t this just normal? I figured it was.

Are you telling me I could be rich in Hollywood if I had the connections?

My thought is yours is a bit of an exceptional ability.

My understanding is that the price of wealth and/or fame in Hollywood is much more than a good screenplay.

And, for many who go through with "paying the price", it still ends up being for naught.

The NPC's have a collective group thought.

They pretty much repeat what they are told.

Yeah, actually I probably could have the connections anyway since I’m in the right zip code, and do have some lowly connections, but you’re right, it’s who you know not what you know.

I just enjoy the imagining of stories and it also relieves issues since you write the issues into the story and then create outcomes.

This subject is absolutely fascinating! I can’t image how people without the inner voice think? Do they look at an ugly thing and it think “that’s hideous “ I mean how do they have opinions that they have to decide to remain in their head or not?

The lady in the video says she has to say everything out loud. I don’t meet many people blurting g negative comments constantly ( although you know we have plenty in our heads), so do they just not have opinions and thoughts streaming constantly?

This thread has kind of explained something that's been bugging me about certain segments of our society.

It seems to suggest that there are those who are strictly reacting and not thinking, because they have no internal dialogue.

Yea it’s pretty freaky

Supposedly it’s like only 20% of people have thoughts.
 Quoting: Miss Bunny Swan

[link to www.psychologytoday.com (secure)]

"Consider inner speech. Subjects experienced themselves as inwardly talking to themselves in 26 percent of all samples, but there were large individual differences: some subjects never experienced inner speech; other subjects experienced inner speech in as many as 75 percent of their samples. The median percentage across subjects was 20 percent."
 Quoting: Deplorable Revbo™

Well ain't that interesting... Considering that certain channeled sources claim only 20 % of humans are real ensouled beings, with the rest being merely simulations. NPC's, in the most literal sense.

Re: Today I learned that not everyone has an internal monologue
Begs the question what those people without thoughts experience when they read something. When I read something, I "hear" the same voice in my head as if I were thinking. And when I hear a song a few times, I can play it back in my thoughts.

I've already found out there are people who can't visualize anything even if their life depended on it. I'm not that good at it myself, but at least I can "move" or regroup shapes in my head, for example when I have to design a flyer for work. But now imagine how good painters must be at this...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77548540

I was thinking the same thing. How can someone read without hearing the words and the voices of the different characters in their head?

It brings up more questions too. Don't these people daydream? Are they incapable of silent prayer? Unable to listen to their favorite song without actually playing it? Don't they self analyze, hash through ideas, deliberate plans, and weigh pros and cons inside their minds?

How can they anticipate how future conversations might go without playing variations of the possible dialogues in their head (like when planning to go in and ask for a raise)?

I've always wondered how people could possibly get bored when your mind is like having your own personal holodeck. It didn't occur to me that some people's minds might work very differently.

Re: Today I learned that not everyone has an internal monologue
I once was shocked when I explained to my wife my general constant inner stream of consciousness and thought processes, and she told me that she had not anything even close to that. I could not believe what she was telling me! This led to much more talk about and I think this started the consciousness in her because now she does have a constant inner voice. So, I guess that some people that says they don’t, just don’t know it’s there.

Maybe most of us are npcs and this is someone else's game. Cause I wouldn't play a game that was this shitty. Or maybe I just decided to play on ultra hard mode. If that's the case next time around I'm playing on Mary Sue mode. Or maybe all of this is real and reality just sucks this bad

sigh

I create movies in my head too - funny movies - even makes me lol a bit. Oddly, I'v found the idea gets made into an actual movie. For example, over a decade ago I imagined a comedic movie about a mousy, overweight woman becoming a CIA agent - some of the details about her dress and demeanor actually played out in the movie Spy with Melissa McCarthy. I have a few movies in my head - stories too. I'd imagine that many creative people, writers, artists, etc have an inner dialogue.

NPC's are adaptive. Their programming is about mimicking true conscious beings. If you point out that you expect them to have an inner dialogue, then they'll claim to have an inner dialogue in the future.

Someone told me that it's impossible to read while dreaming - I read quite a bit in my dreams. Just last night/this morning I dreamed that a friend and I were making plans to go on a vacation together and I'm reading the calendar, September, clear as day and the numbers too. I've also read in other languages - like when I dreamed I was in Germany at an outdoor market and was reading the signs by the food.

I've assumed that we experience consciousness more or less the same way, including an internal monologue or maybe dialogue. Apparently not.

Who are the people that don't have an internal voice? Are they also color-blind? Are they more likely to be progressives or JW's or alcoholics? Maybe they're NPCs.

Everyone thinks, but not everyone has a defined 'digital voice'.

It is altered in different mental diereses as well.

In some cases in schizophrenia it is either eliminated or altered. Either no digital voice or often replaced with alternate voices which are multiple and not perceived as their own internal voice (i.e. hearing voices).

As others pointed out, children and animals still 'think' but more in connected pictures, memories, concepts without a fully defined digital voice as they do not posses a complete or mature set of language processing skills.

Wow, that makes sense. I think my husband is one of these. I texted him and my two kids about this and the kids said yep, the voice is always there. Haven’t heard from the hubby yet, but he did tell me he can’t remember dreams at all and said he doesn’t dream. I found that impossible. Years later he told me he now dreams....

Sometimes I put my thoughts down in mindmaps or something so my wife can follow them. Giant flow charts and connected thoughts so she can understand me better.

I should get her to map out her thought process sometime. could be interesting.

Everyone has an inner dialogue if their brain is alive, which of course it is.

Whether someone recognizes it or not is another matter. They are simply unaware of it, but it's going on full blast whether they realize it or not.
