This article is interesting. Be sure you are also getting some zinc in your diet. Quercetin is a natural bioflavonoid found in produce, but for COVID you want to hit it hard with pills.

Zinc is a decidedly anti-viral mineral. High intracellular concentrations inhibit the replication of RNA type viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2. Zinc does this by blocking RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), the core enzyme of their multiprotein replication and transcription complex that is critical for the copying of viral RNA.

That’s the conundrum. In high concentrations, zinc can block coronavirus reproduction, but the cell is typically disinclined to tolerate high levels of zinc due to concerns about its other actions.

Enter the zinc ionophores.

Fortunately, there are molecules that can act as facilitators and enhance the entry of zinc into the cell. These are known as zinc ionophores, and here’s the payoff: in addition to its effects on endosome pH, chloroquine has also been demonstrated to be a zinc ionophore.

But there’s even more to the story. In addition to chloroquine, the nutraceuticals quercetin (bioflavonoid) and epigallocatechin-gallate (green tea polyphenol) are also zinc ionophores. Quercetin plus zinc is being tested as an anti-viral in human clinical trials for the treatment of Covid-19. The combination had already made it through animal trials for use against Ebola and SARS-CoV1, and was approved by the FDA for human clinical trials.

Question: How do you know when or if you're taking TOO MUCH zinc?? Is that a concern? Because too much zinc can weaken the immune system.

Do you take zinc 365 days a year? Or is it on and off?

Why not start with a nutritional source? There are a lot of great dishes that contain both nutrients without the risk of too much.

Wash it down with a gin and tonic.

Yeah, probably the best course to take, is to take a rather small dose each day.

Because there is such a thing as zinc toxicity in the human body (too much zinc).

I forget the link, but I listened to an older doctor with many older patients who got COVID, and he kept every one out of the hospital simply with supplements like C, D, minerals. etc.

His advice is to just take normal multi vitamin supplements that most of us take, and the minute you start getting any symptoms, then and only then amp up the rest. Maybe 8,000 mg C, same for D, up the zinc, etc. I am taking Quercetin 250 mg once a day but will probably double that to 500 mg twice a day if I get symptoms.

I get sick to my stomach with a lot of zinc, like the 50 mg pills. I tend to hope that the organic veggies I eat, esp the greens, and a good diet, will help me the most. If I take 6000 C in a day, even the stomach friendly calcium ascorbate, my insides turn to mush. So tolerances differ.

By the way quercetin is also excellent for vascular health, and there are reports that COVID is primarily an attack on vascular tissue. My sister went to medical school and she said one prof told the class that daily quercetin will keep you from ever having a stroke. She is taking 500 mg a day right for virus prevention hopefully.

What we (I) don't know is how effective quercetin is as zinc Ionophore compared to hydroxychloroquine. How much quercetin would one have to take to be comparable to a dose of hydroxychloroquine? Does anybody know?

I found this: [link to www.cancertreatmentsresearch.com (secure)]

Quercetin
What is this: Quercetin is an extract found in many fruits, vegetables, leaves, seeds, and grains and in high amounts in onions. It can be found at online shops as food supplement in capsules such as e.g. 500mg/capsule, and is relatively cheap. Next to extracts such as Curcumin, Green tea extract, Berberine, Quercetin is one of the most relevant natural extracts in the fight against cancer (Ref.) as well as auto-immune disease and allergic reactions (Ref.).

What is the potential:

Quercetin has important anti-viral (Ref.1, Ref.2, Ref.3, etc.) activities as well as anti-inflammatory (Ref.), both of which aspects are very important in prevention and/or treatment to reduce potential lethal mechanisms in Coronavirus infected patients.
Quercetin has already proven successful at treating Ebola and Zika viruses and researchers in Québec believe it could prove effective against COVID-19 (Ref.). The Foundation of the Montreal Clinical Research Institute (IRCM) anounced a $1 million contribution from the Lazaridis Family Foundation to support research led by the researchers in Québec on the antiviral drug isoquercetin (Ref.)
Quercetin makes very much sense to use as is a MCT (1-4) inhibitor which as a result inhibits fermentation and in turn inhibits viral replication, due to similar mechanisms as discussed in the Vitamin C section above
Quercetin is also a Zinc ionophore (please see the discussion on ionophore in the Hydroxychloroquine section)
How to take: In the preventive phase, I would take 1g/day and for active disease I would take 3g/day. If possible, such dose as 3g/day should be increased step by step. On this line, eating (not cocked) onion should also have some preventive role due to the high Quercetin content.

also saw this:

[link to www.medpagetoday.com (secure)]

They are seeing great results with healthcare workers on 500 mg a day and patients on 1000 mg a day. But its still in preliminary studies and all that jazz.

In doing a search, I found an extraordinary amount of links about quercetin being effective in shrinking cancer tumors. Fascinating information out there. I never even heard of it before this year.

A guy I consider a genius suggests taking supplements no more than 5 days per week. Zinc he suggests once weekly unless you're sick. This is to prevent toxicity and allow the liver to clean itself.

I know that's not definitive from a recognized expert, but it sounds plausible to me and I tend to take that approach. I do tend to take zinc 2-3 times weekly when doing intense exercise multiple days.

True, but you can't buy HC over the counter like you can Quercetin (at least not in the US), and most pharmacies are posting this notice about filling prescriptions for it, if you're lucky enough to find a doc who will write you one for it proactively:

"Due to directives from Boards of Pharmacy, we are ONLY dispensing Hydroxychloroquine to patients with history of use for an autoimmune disorder such as Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis prior to 3/1/2020 or a positive diagnosis of COVID-19"

I’m a Nutritional Therapist and one of the functional tests I perform on clients is the Zinc Taste Test. It’s very simple.

You take two teaspoons of Aquarius Zinc solution and swish it around in your mouth. If it tastes bitter and strong you not zinc deficient. If it tastes like water or has hardly any taste at all you are slightly zinc deficient, if it tastes sweet you are severely zinc deficient.

My experience is that 80 to 90 percent of people are zinc deficient to one extent or another. The most frequent reason is lack of stomach acid, which is an entirely different subject.

Biotics brand is the one I use just because I have a wholesale account with them and I’m confident that they produce clean, very high quality products. I’m sure other brands are probably fine.

If you are interested in reading about the epidemic of low stomach acid you can read my articles at kodiakcompass.com . They are the two top stories posted there right now.
