Quoting: COVID19 I certainly wish that my childhood was in the woods, as oppossed to where I grew up... The escape of a trip into mountains or a day lying by the beach may feel like an extravagance to city dwellers confined by a traditional work schedule. But exposure to green and blue spaces is far more than just a luxury. For kids, growing up without regular exposure to nature seems to have ripple effects that persist into adulthood, according to research published in International Journal of Environmental Health and Public Health. Using data from 3,585 people collected across four cities in Europe, scientists from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (also called IS Global) report a strong relationship between growing up away from the natural world and mental health in adulthood. Overall, they found a strong correlation between low exposure to nature during childhood and higher levels of of nervousness and feelings of depression in adulthood. Co-author Mark Nieuwenhuijsen, Ph.D., director of IS Global’s urban planning, environment and health initiative, tells Inverse that the relationship between nature and mental health remained strong, even when he adjusted for confounding factors [link to getpocket.com (secure)] I grew up in the woods, ended up living in North Philly and Brooklyn for a few years. I could never live in a city again. It's incredibly depressing lol. |

Yes, there are all sorts of psychological benefits to nature - this is what our brain developed to exist in, after all.. it's our ancestral home, so to speak. But also, there are major health benefits to not taking in such atmospheric poisons in the formative years of brain development, no doubt! |

Serepta Ann User ID: 79213352 United States 08/15/2020 08:35 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | this may be a tiny portion of it, but it's not even touching real problems. Can nature restore your internal clock, absolutely! I grew up in a small town, dawn to dusk (when the street lights came on) we were outside, there were woods to explore, games to play, boys to irritate, bikes to ride. We didn't have fancy lunches and internet games. We didn't watch the news, that wasn't allowed...I didn't know there was a war or a riot...once in a while in school we got to hear Walter Cronkite but that was it, we had kid things to do, we weren't allowed in adult conversations. We had family dinners every night and we took family vacations, even if it was just pitching a tent in the campground near a good fishing spot. Kids today are bombarded 24/7 with news and misinformation (I can't tell you how many times I have to correct a grandkid from stupid information on tik tok) They don't have to be kids anymore. We've lost a generation already, take the electronics away from your kids, stop pushing them to be adults. Stop letting them run the show, they need adults not best friends. They don't need to know everything, just be kids. You can't tell me it's just nature/city, my momma grew up in Chicago and she was just fine. It's time and entitlement You have to train your mind to be stronger than your emotions or you will lose yourself every time |
