Its strange, even though the US has the best athletes in the World, we haven't won an Olympic weight lifting medal since the 1984 games, a US woman did win a medal at the 2000 games.

Up to the 1950s we were very competitive in Olympic lifts. I blame power lifting, any guy that get serious about lifting gravitates to this. You have to start Olympic style lifting when you're young, its more than just strength, it takes tremendous coordination.

I myself fell into power lifting, but about 3 years before i got sick I started Olympic style lifting, the snatch & the clean & jerk. It is super hard, but my strength went through the roof, I was competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments then & my training partners & competition all noticed a huge change, it creates functional strength. If you can clean & jerk 250 pounds, you can throw a man around pretty easily

Its why all the elite football programs focus on Olympic style lifts, sure benching 300 pounds is great, but how many times are you lying on your back pushing someone in football? lol Never!

If you lift, do a set of 10 cleans with just 135 pounds, lol you'll find out why almost no one does these lifts!

The last American to win Gold was Charles Vinci Bantamweight in 1960!
