Aviation technology: Cold war history, how could heavy, gunless F4 bomber interceptors, defeat light agile Mig 17s

The invasion of South Vietnam no one foresaw. The fear of Russian bomber attack on the USA was a mutual devil directed paranoia on both sides. The high speed (mach 2.3) F4 Phantom Interceptor was the USA's defensive response. It was not intended for short range dog fighting and had no guns, well out matched by the light weight agile Mig 17s. This is the history of 60s aviation technology.
