Anonymous Coward User ID: 80484962 Finland 07/15/2021 11:24 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This thread got me thinking: Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80244443 [link to www.godlikeproductions.com] By OP predicting that 1 poster would finally make a correct prediction, it setup some parameters for his statement to be true that I find interesting. 1) If one poster makes a correct prediction, OP has correctly predicted that and there is now incorrect because 2 posters would have made correct predictions. 2) The only way that OP could be correct is if he is the only poster to ever make a correct prediction by saying 1 poster would finally make a correct prediction. I find that to be very interesting in terms of logic and reasoning. What are some other seemingly simple statements that unlock layers of meaning and interpretations? this is more a paradox than question of layers of meanings and interpretations. It's a bit like the Liar's Paradox Not long a go a little girl invented a new paradox The Pinocchio paradox arises when Pinocchio says "My nose grows now" and is a version of the liar paradox.[1] The liar paradox is defined in philosophy and logic as the statement "This sentence is false." Any attempts to assign a classical binary truth value to this statement lead to a contradiction, or paradox. This occurs because if the statement "This sentence is false" is true, then it is false; this would mean that it is technically true, but also that it is false, and so on without end. Although the Pinocchio paradox belongs to the liar paradox tradition, it is a special case because it has no semantic predicates, as for example "My sentence is false" does [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] |

However, I think a paradox only accounts for a part of what I am talking about. If only #1 on my list existed then I would believe it is a paradox. However, since #2 does exist, it no longer really is a paradox because there is a scenario in which his statement could be true. You just have to dig a little deeper to get to that truth whereas the surface level thought of someone else having the correct prediction being OPs prediction simply could never be true by logical deduction. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 80244443 United States 07/15/2021 11:32 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | thinking about it: Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80484962 I predict that there will never be true predictions at GLP is a genuine liar's paradox ... That is a paradox. However, that is not what I presented. I said that the OP claimed there would be 1 correct prediction. On surface level, you would think he is speaking of another poster. However, logically, that could never be true because if someone else was correct then OP would be correct so there would be 2 correct predictions. On closer inspection, OP could be correct only if his post was self-referential. If no one ever made a correct prediction, then OP would be correct because his prediction of only 1 person ever having a correct prediction would be correct! To me, that goes beyond paradox. |

I predict there will be 1 correct prediction on GLP or 2. I predict that the only correct prediction is that there will never be a correct prediction on GLP other than this prediction of no other correct predictions ever happening on GLP. |
