My witchy new age relatives refuse to accept that gold-copper alloy is well-known to modern science
I'm open minded and don't really care if you believe in the nonsense most new agers do. Live and let live, you know.

It does bother me, though, that even when they refuse to acknowledge that something's well-understood by the modern materials science.

When I last met them, we had a discussion about materials since I'm a materials physicists by profession. They brought up copper-gold alloys of the "old Atlantis" as something that the modern science hasn't been able to make or understand.

Wrong on both accounts. Furthermore, they attributed properties (e.g. superconductivity and super toughness) to copper-gold alloys that clearly aren't true. They stuck to the old writings instead of modern science.

Why is it that even in the face of empirical evidence, the old writings must be true and science must be wrong?

We humans have an innate problem with ignoring facts when what we BELIEVE to be true is challenged or proven wrong by facts.

I believe it is one of our worst traits and it has kept us from advancing as a species.

Imagine a world where people accepted facts counter to their beliefs and learned together for the greater good while expanding their own knowledge.

That's exactly why I became a professional scientist. The scientific community is my safe harbor away from the mundane arguments and petty fights.

I've worked side by side with Russian, Iranian and Pakistani scientists. We don't give shit about religion or politics. So, you don't eat pork, have to have a prayer break, or your grandfather was marched in to kill my forefathers in 1940s? Live and let live. Now it's just the pursuit of knowledge.

Your idea gets proven wrong by an experiment? It's more a cause for celebration than shame/disappointment.

An experimental result destroys a well-established theory? What could be more exciting?!

they think copper mixed with gold would be super tough? wouldn't it be soft like copper or soft like gold?

maybe if they mixed copper with tin they might get some hardness?

Have fun!

I love being wrong myself. One of the best sensations is when you realize something you assumed isn't there and there is a limitless sea of possibilities.

Better at explaining it then me. Check the triangle chart for a clearer picture of the metallurgical mixes.

Re: My witchy new age relatives refuse to accept that gold-copper alloy is well-known to modern science
I'm glad you are here.

I have a question.

What can cause cheap gold to burn/become unbearably hot to the skin, ring, earrings, necklace, piercings, anklet, all at once?

What scientific method could be used to do that...from a distance?

I placed a piece (one earring)on an object on my night table, just as a last confused curious before sleeping.

That item was scorched in the morning, literally blackened.

Ever heard of such a thing?

Gold's excellent conductor and suspect to heating by electromagnetic induction.

Do you have stray variable magnetic fields around you?

Are you sure it's high temperature and not just a subjective feeling that could be caused by an allergic reaction due to impurities in the cheap gold (e.g. nickel)?

It was the same gold I had worn for years. Years.
The item I placed the earring on was seriously charred. Even smelled charred.

Anything Super HIGH Voltage. Like those big power lines they have warning signs around.

TV or Radio Antenna maybe could be a culprit.

But honestly it would have to be extremely close.
