Mechanics? What is a plug and play swap for a 2006 5.4 Triton engine?
I'm looking at a 2006 expedition in great shape, but it has the 5.4 Triton engine that scares me off. They seem to be plagued with problems. Is there a reasonable swap for the 5.4? I'm not really a ford guy and I don't know what is available.
I don't have the time or the crayons to explain this to you.

I think they got the bugs worked out by then. They are really not a bad engine. Worthy of 300,000 miles or better.

Really don't know of any easy swaps. Ford usually sucks in that aspect.

Apparently Fraser engines rebuild and bulletproof them. Not sure on a swap though

If you can't figure this out, might I suggest a replaced oil pump... Not sure if that year has the plastic chain guides or not, but that is an additional replacement to be made (replace with metal). I do know that this works on '04. Not sure if the problem is the same.

Do you have any idea of the cost for a crate engine? 10 years ago it cost me 3200 to put a crate engine into my 98 gmc. That's what they're asking for the expedition

I suppose i might consider that and replacing the guides (plastic I think) before there is a problem.

I should elaborate; one of the biggest design defects of the older engines is not getting enough oil to them. This causes sludge and eventually broken plastic guides. After that, you have what I like to call a "slightly used early 2000s stock ford engine". Aka it's FRIGGED.

Yeah if there's 200,000 on there already it's a gamble. But if the standard issues haven't popped up yet, this will help you get much more out of it.

I don't mind the swap idea either. This is just if you decide against it or can not find anything. Sorry I can't help there.

Throw an LS in there and call it a day.

Probably not plug and play.. but one of the easier more reliable swaps.

A reader and listen to see if there are any funny sounds that might be coming from the timing chain.
It is a 50K car and still very nice, which is the only reason I'm even thinking of buying a Ford.

Re: Mechanics? What is a plug and play swap for a 2006 5.4 Triton engine?
5.4 isn’t a bad motor at all, easily capable of 300k... I beat the heck out of my 5.4, didn’t change the oil very often...and it just kept on taking the abuse. Having owned a 2000 expedition the only problems I EVER had was the motor spit two spark plugs...easy fix for me, but I’m a mechanic. The head problem with spark plugs was corrected by 2006.

As far as swapping, you might want to be a good mechanic/fabricator...or have some deep pockets.

Ran one for five years 0 problems except coils.
Same #1 cylinder.

I know there was also a problem with a fuel injector sticking open, leading to a seized cylinder.

You can easily spend $600 just for aftermarket cam phasers.

My son has one in his driveway, just spent $1200 in cam parts, got it running and in two days it seized.

I guess when it runs, it runs so nice he just wouldn't give up. After it seized, a tree fell on it. I think that's a sign.

He spent days just drilling out broken bolts and he bitched hard about the difficulty in replacing the starter, which was about $200.

I'd run away.

LOL. My gmc pickup is sitting without a starter. both bolts broke off and my son could only get one stub out. I think he screwed up the other one. I would happily pay 200 to get someone to remove the other stub and put on a starter.
