Thanks for making my point. Music must be reexperirnced for its effect. Either in recurrent sound, or in memory. There is no actual substance to it, even as it is symbolically represented on paper. Musicians pitifully try to make their musical ideas real.

now when a song can be associated with an experience thats different...we relied on radio and record companies to weed thru the bad writers and bad players and present something that might be a hit song but even they failed most times...

and now all music is agenda driven propaganda so it all sucks really bad but the youngers dont know it.

I've met Eddy Money, Brookes and Dunn, Garth Brookes, Alice Cooper and quite few others. None of them were strange except Brookes. He's friends with my kid brother through their work with volunteer fire departments, he's a strange dude. His college roommate used to do my lawn and he was an odd duck, too.

Eddy Money and Alice Cooper were just normal dudes. Same as Adam West, John Frakes, and other actors and musicians I've babysat back in the day.

It's the proto-celebrities that are fuckwit weirdos. We had some asshat from a MST3K movie (not Joel, Mike, or the voice actors). Some guy that had been in one of the films they parodied and he was complete tool. I can't even remember which film it was, but he acted as if he had starred in the Godfather alongside Brando and Duvall.

Most celebrities I've encountered are largely polite, intelligent people. Some have quirks and opinions, but they're just people.

Addendum: Phil Collins was a complete prick and Robbin Williams was so nice to the backstage people, you forgot he was there!

I love musicians and artists. They bring color to a gloomy world.

I was married to a drummer, widowed, now married to a bass player. My kids play music too.

Music can take you to a specific place in only a few seconds. It is magical.

Most musicians have forgotten the power and responsibility of the bard, to be the voice of the people. They are like a light in the darkness, the voice of truth, in the propaganda, the voice of the people amongst the tyrants. They can warn the king when he goes to far and inspire revolutions if they won't listen.

Most musicians sell their soul for fame though. Their music contains no deeper truth; other than base animal desires and they lead the people, like the pied piper through the mouth of hell.

We are definitely a different breed and it's hard to try to marry a non musician because they will always try to make you quit playing. When you have to play an instrument, it's like an obsessive/compulsive disorder. These are the people who are actually good musicians, but they suck at most other things. I'm a fairly good one, only partly obsessed. I can go days without playing, and that's why I'm not really good. To be really good you have to play every single day of your life to keep your hands and mind nimble. It's the kind of job you have to practice on all of your days off, and no one wants to pay you because they think you are doing it for fun and don't need money. Being a musician is like taking a vow of poverty. The ones who do succeed have horrible lives, living in hotel rooms and missing holidays with their families.
If you are a musician, you have no choice. I was trying to get at the neighbor's piano when I was five years old. Adults who tell me they'd like to play guitar are met with a snicker from me. If you didn't play an instrument as a child, you can never be actually good. I've been playing my whole life, you'd think I'd be better at it, but I also like to cook real food and write and do other things. I'm not totally obsessed like a truly great musician is. I've met a few. They have magic in their fingers and they gave up their whole lives to get it, by practicing every waking moment.

Writing and preforming are different talents. I do not indulge the latter.

ps, the best high I ever had was at the Philly Folk Fest, main stage, playing my bass with a band, singing a song I wrote and having a huge crowd loving it. It's like no other high, like an intimate connection with thousands of people.
