Good grief. Yes you can have fairly big debt but near perfect credit score.
But paying off the debt isn’t going to exactly put you in a lower credit-worthy bracket. I recall years back securing a mortgage, and in order to get an even lower rate I was required to pay off one vehicle. It was worth it.

Rumor is that it's only ten grand and you can't make too much money or you don't get it. They are putting too many demands to get the money and it's nothing compared to the amount of debt most people have.

The Dept. of Education said I owed $5,000, so I paid them $5,000. After that, they said I still owed $5,000. And this has affected my credit for over 20 years. With a credit card debt, I paid $5,000 to Capital One. They said they never got it. The bank sent them the front of the cancelled check. They said they needed the back, which my bank said they didn't have. Later, I started to repay through a consolidation agency my mother forced me to use. I paid $250 a month for two years and was told that they never received any money from the agency. This is what life is like when you are poor. Everything is corrupt and it's too overwhelming to deal with.

Your loans are probably your oldest lines of credit and the main reason for having good credit. If you pay it off... your credit could potentially tank later on when the loans fall off your credit score after being paid off. I don't blame you for not being in a hurry.

But you're not being realistic. If you borrow money and only pay the minimum amount due... you're going to pay back at least double doing it that way. Mortgages are the same way. Go play around with mortgage calculators. If you paid only the minimum payment due every month for the duration of the mortgage at the end you paid at least 2 times what the purchase price of the house originally was. Like I said... go play around with mortgage calculators and you'll see.

If you cancel their student loan debt, then their degree needs to be nullified as well.
