are u using the first port to connect to the switch
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 82157960

So from gateway to switch use port 1? Which port from switch to backroom?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83038270

Just did a bit of googling.the switch port that you plug into from your modem shouldn't matter. Someone reported having the same issue as yourself. The fix was set everything up as you require then restart your modem. Try it...might just work

Thanks! I just tried it and that did not work... funny as shit though... in wifi standing next to it, its pulling 200mbps... upload of 60mbps.

When connected via cable through the switch it drops the download to 10mbps and upload was around 55mbps... so for whatever reason this damn switch is throttling download?

I bought two, was going to use it at another location, hoping this setup would work. Let me swap the switch and see...

then it is your long cable.

put the switch next to the router on a smaller cable. then try through ur laptop. using same ports as your current setup that has low speed.

WAP works well if implemented right....

Thanks. That was the reason cable was run to the back. Too much interference. Wifi sucks ass in the back...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83038270

Most likely with three total access points (including the router) you can get the coverage you need. WAP has to be configured properly....trust me it works.

#1 rule of networking troubleshooting, start at the physical layer and work your way up the OSI model. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried looking at something in a config or something in an application and then it ends up being something physical.

Not a whole lot to go on... the GUI for the gateway is an app... not a traditional in depth. The switch is unmanaged. I literally have tried every plug, different cables, I dont know what else to do... thanks.

Re: Need some computer network help
I just posted as an AC because I’m coming from my mobile but i just re-read your original post and saw you mentioning connecting the switches in the front and back. If that’s the case, you may need a crossover cable instead of a standard Ethernet cable, depending on the devices. The difference in the two cables is just inverting a couple of the wires at the clips (check Google as you’ll find more info there.)

I had a similar situation and it was the ethernet cable. I didn't believe it either because it was cat 6 but no matter what its speed was under 20mbps. I think it was just a cheap cable. If your still having the same issue I would go grab another cable locally and test it out.

Re: Need some computer network help
What speeds are you referring to?

Are you downloading something from the internet or from a server on your network?

Your internet downloads will be limited to your internet speed.

Test your speed from one computer to another. Set up a network share and send some files back and forth, keeping an eye on the speed. You'll of course be limited to drive and computer speed. If you're experiencing slow speeds, then there could be an issue with your switch or your cable. I would not use Cat 6 cables. I stopped using them years ago. Try a good quality Cat 7 shielded cable with gold plated connectors. Get length closest to what you need and not much longer. Don't coil up any excess cable at the end, it can act like an induction coil and pick up interference from things like motors, transformers, radio transmitters, florescent lights, etc.

Also make sure you haven't duplicated any IP addresses. Make sure someone isn't in your wifi access point (in fact, disable it while testing the cabling). Check your computer for viruses. Try running your ethernet cable directly between 2 computers too, eliminating the need to go through any switch or hub. You don't need a router or switch to do that.

Make sure your cable isn't running near your fridge or microwave oven or anything else that could induce noise. Keep your switch and router away from strong EM fields too.

You'll eventually figure it out with various testing schemes.

Re: Need some computer network help
The problem is that when you connect two switches together you have to use a crossover cable (a to b) not a straight through cable (b to b). When you connect two switches with a straight through cable, and one of the two switches isn’t smart enough to automatically detect and correct the issue, then it will kind of work but there will be high packet loss and generally slow speeds across the whole LAN.

Make sure the routers, switches, and cables are all rated for 1 gigabit speed.

Thiss

First thought of mine.

Cable it with CAT7 Where you can. (Dirt cheap these days)

Also, if you're looking into the Wifi route, look into Mesh adapters. (Wired with CAT7)
One of these days... A *REAL* rain is gonna come and wash all this scum off the streets.

Cross-over cables haven't been necessary for eons. All switches for like the last dozen+ years can auto detect and correct any crossed cables.

Right.

Also a switch is just a pass through that doesn't divide the internet like a splitter will do. Each line hooked to it receive the full internet.

Upgrading the cables from cat5 to cat6 or higher is also a good thing.

When using a cat cable, if it is longer than 55', speed will begin to fall off as you add length past that.

I just ran 150' of cat6. The connection comes through a wireless and wired router, to the monitered switch and then to me. These are located in another building.

I doesn't matter if you have a monitored or an unmonitored switch. The monitored one simply allows you to configure security, but you don't need to if you router already has it.

The switch I have is rated for 1gig. My connection for this particular line is starlink and at my end I still receive well over 60mbps download and well over 7mbps up. It varies due to the line of sight of satellites within the Starlink dish range of sight. Sometimes it will drop off some, if a satellite moves out of sight before another moves in to replace it.

My other internet connection is Centurylink ran from a centurylink hub over two miles away and administerd by Centurylink. My connection to it is ran over the existing telephone line. The Centurylink router provided by them is in my room and with it I only receive 7.8mbps down and 700kbps up.

"So it was 5g router/receiver in main room to switch, then used 4 ports. 3 ports for local devices and the 4th port for the ethernet to the back house. In back house ethernet connects into the switch and three devices plug into switch."

Why not run ethernet from the modem btw not 5g router..
You have 2 ethernet ports on the modem, run a ethernet cable from each port to each switch, then disperse the ethernets from each switch to each device as desired.

It sounds like you are running an ethernet from the modem to the first switch, then running another ethernet from the first switch to the 2nd switch across the house?
Not sure I would run it that way if the modem or 5 g router as you call it has 2 ethernet ports.. Utilize both those ports, one to each switch.. then run your devices off of each switch.

That would be more ideal a setup imo..

Thats actually pretty good. Did not think of that. I could do that... the only issue is that I am losing speed at the switches. Once it goes from gateway/modem to switch and out from switch its throttled.

Buy some ethernet over powerline plugs.

That way you can use your home's power outlets to transmit internet via ethernet ports.
