On Jan. 3, 2023 SOHO coronagraphs recorded the most dramatic CME in years. This looks to be responsible for the rise in X-Ray background levels. The explosion happened on the farside of the sun, so the CME is heading away from Earth.

We are one CME away from extinction! total fear mongering bull shit 3 JANUARY NON-EARTH DIRECTED CME FROM AR BEYOND EAST LIMB published: Tuesday, January 03, 2023 20:39 UTC A coronal mass ejection (CME) occurred from just beyond the east limb on 3 January, 2023. This CME appeared to be associated with a C3 flare at 03/0646 UTC. The flare was observed in GOES SUVI imagery and appeared to emanate from an active region (AR) just beyond the east limb. NSO/GONG helioseismology(link is external) data indicated a likely AR about one day or so from rotating onto the visible solar disk. Since CMEs can expand considerably during their interplanetary transit, this CME was analyzed closely and modeled. Results indicated a passage most likely to be behind Earth's orbit on 6 January.
