Cashed out my 401k and my wife and I have never been happier!!!
Greetings, GLP! Let me give you a little story because I think my situation is somewhat universal here on GLP and might be of use to some of you. My wife and I are lower/middle-class earners- she makes 16/hr as a CNA and I make 19/hr as a licensed level "D" wastewater treatment operator. Money has always been a struggle for us and we consistently have found ourselves in debt. Additionally, as of September 2022, I lost my job. I quickly found another for the same pay, but here is what I did. I cashed out my 401k (I had 63k after 11 years w/3% match=~42k after taxes and penalty)- set aside the money for taxes and here is how I spent it:

1.) Paid off our cars- 16k combined
2.) Paid off credit cards- 8k
3.) Paid off my wife's medical bills- 3.5k
4.) New furnace for our house- 5.5k
5.) Bought a few other needed things i.e. timing belt for car, new stove, new dryer etc...4.5k
6.) Put the rest in a wells fargo savings account-~4-5k

Never have we been more at peace. Prior to this we always struggled with money. We knew we needed some of these things but weren't sure as to how we could afford them. Plus the credit card bills were racking up. Now, some of you might wonder what we will do in retirement. Number one- we are hoping for SS, but even if it's not there, we only need ~1700 a month (combined) to live comfortably. We could essentially work part-time now and live just fine. Also by the time we retire 2047, our house will be paid off reducing our needed income to ~1200 a month- accounting for inflation as well!! So, long story short- some of you are in the same situation as us. I can tell you I dont care that many think we were stupid for doing this. That doesnt cause us to lose sleep- being in debt did, and now we have little to no financial worries. 100% worth it. And I could care less about the stupid stock market now. Something for you all to think about...

lol- really, really not. You have no idea how much peace my wife and I have now. Would much rather be debt free and have ~500 left over each month than worry about every single dime because we didnt know if we could make ends meet each month. BTW every calcualtions we've looked at shows that by the time we retire based on the market we would only have about 150k anyway. That would avoid the penalty by still have to pay taxes. So, we could continue to freak out about money or at least live a bit and deal with a big IF about social security once we hit 68. If its gone- big deal well only need 1200 buck a month to live anyway

With everything paid off, you will have extra money to put into an IRA which will save on income taxes, and you can start over on your 401k as well.
By the time you retire, the extra thousands you have in those accounts plus your Social Security income , will be plenty of money for retirement.
If you so choose. Some extra savings during retirement is a good to have in case of emergencies and large unforeseen expenses such as another new furnace, new roof, etc.

You're going to pay taxes out the ass on that. It will be reported as regular income plus a 10% penalty on top of that. Probably in neighborhood of 40%

and once again, you flex your financial stupidity

a 401K basically doubles every 6-7yrs on average, so if you never touched it, it would be worth several hundred thousand dollars or more when you're retirement age

you're also forgetting about inflation and medical insurance and a whole host of other expenses you will incur later in life

I completely understand worrying about money, but you should have figured out a way to pay down your debts over time, live within your means and continue to contribute to your retirement.

You have some relief right now, but the trade off is you've simply kicked the financial pain down the road.

I would tell you to get Dave Ramseys book, but it's too late, you already fucked yourself. Good luck, and I mean that.

I dont find it shameful. As a matter of fact, in the event you and your wife separated...that money would have gone half to her and her new boyfriend. Now you reduced your losses but gained by spending in a way that demonstrates your willingness to provide and ability to invest in your household as a whole. No risks were taken. Enjoy.

Re: Cashed out my 401k and my wife and I have never been happier!!!
We did the same thing a few years back. We had consolidated all our debt into one loan and then we couldn't manage the payment each month. Decided to cash out my IRA from when I worked before kids. Paid everything off. Everything but the house. It was such a relief! We've done great since then. Have savings for the first time in our 25 years of marriage. We've been able to save enough that we paid cash for a new HVAC system, used car, several appliances....all stuff we'd have had to put on a card before. It was totally worth it. We've built our retirement back up a little. But we figured it was silly to have that money sitting there for later if we couldn't feed our kids now.

I made 95k off 500 bucks so dont think you cant make that money back overnight. this is murica. how do some do it over and over again you may ask? well pay particular attention to trends, and especially what consumers ages 12+ and investors 18+ are interested in.

Why? Nobody is forcing you to be in a 401K. Yes, I know you will automatically be enrolled, but you can opt out.

A 401K is a good thing. I can't believe people don't understand this.

People need to learn to live within their means or find a way to make more money.

This thread tells me, people are seriously hurting financially and the first thing they do is liquidate their retirement which is impressively stupid.

Prior to doing this our debts were averaging about 14% in interest- which I expected to pay off in 2040. I would have never gotten a return like that guaranteed in the market. IDK being debt free is really great- we can always work part-time in retirement.

barack Obama + Joe Biden = the plane called America is crashing into the mountain.

Medicare broke in 2027. At this point it doesn't matter.

The plan is to confiscate all 401K / IRAs and to create a new global digital currency retirement system.

that will be announced in 2024 after they complete the 3rd steal election in a row. President Newsome is coming and it will be nasty.

good luck.
