Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79482686 I know SMART meters output a ton of microwave radiation..but is this something I should be concerned with? They list a number on the mailing that says call to let us know if you don't want SMART meter installed..but it will be an additional $19.95 on your monthly bill if you decline it. I'm a little tight with money but I feel I should decline. I can always pick up a side gig to cover. What are your thoughts on SMART meter for electric/gas? " A ton of microwave radiation"??? it's a radio connection not "ionizing radiation". Service is Cheaper because an attendant doesn't have to walk up and read your meter and write down the numbers.. once every few weeks. Can they limit your power? Probably. That is very common in heavy industry to balance loads. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 76677678 United States 03/26/2023 07:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I don't tryst those meters. They can see which devices are being powered, and shut off your service whenever they want. My electric company tried the same with me. I had a legal aid clinic send them a letter, ccing the state public utilities commission. It said something like, "fuck you; you have no right to trespass on my property for this purpose; forcing me to accept a smart meter is violating my consumer rights; and I will disconnect service and switch on my solar panels if you proceed." The electric company didn't bother me again about it. |

I was told by a meter reader because I did not want a smart meter either. He told me the readings of the old meter far outweigh the new meter. The newer one is much more sensitive. So I kept the old analog meter. He said THAT IT WOULD SAVE ME MONEY IN THE LONG RUN to keep the old meter.. |

oiko User ID: 79679709 03/26/2023 08:06 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | They've replaced both my gas and (just last year) electric meters. I tested both when they were installed with a meter and found neither to be "off the charts" as some say and have no ill effects, though I do believe my "usage" hasn't gone up, their numbers claim it has. I don't have any "smart" electronics at all (not even a cell phone), so they cannot control anything in my home, all they know now is every time anything is in use... fuckers. I keep on top of the supplier choices and don't use a lot of electric, so the cost isn't a problem. Paying extra each month to NOT have a "smart" meter would just piss me off every time I paid the bill. I was toying with trying to get me meter to stop spinning once and saw it spinning backwards! I swear! Found the only thing still plugged in was the backup battery on a desk top computer, apparently it was feeding back through the lines... I may try something in the future with wind or solar. Who does your thinking? |

They charge you extra because they have to read the meter in person. They can refuse you if you have it in back with a dog etc too. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85516073 The utility will replace the old meter anyway. They do not keep the old ones around as they will not interface with the new system so they told me. They, however, will turn off your meter's "smart" capability and as you say, send out a human to read it. What is to say they never turn it off or do so only temporarily? I researched this topic back when I was pushed into one at my residence in 2020. It seems there is some things that can be done to mitigate the EMF. However, most of the EMF you get comes from.....your neighbor's meter because it mostly projects outwards 180*. There is much evidence to support this. So if you're meter is on your garage or behind a brick wall, there is little chance you are subjected to much EMF at all with a much better chance of exposure via a close neighbor. As long as you're not standing with in three feet directly behind it all day, I wouldn't worry about it and I don't. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 76095815 03/26/2023 08:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have read horror stories about these things ,people with holiday homes say the bills for the old anologue meter with everything turned off would only be a few bucks ,with the new meter reporting back twice a minute with everything turned off the bills were hundreds and the only change was the meter . As another poster said above time lapse photos show when the meter was changed it kills everything around it ,same with WiFi routers put a house plant near it and it will kill it . One person online said they bought their own meter and had it installed by a accredited professional as in the UK we have to rent them , he got round this and told them to shove it and won his case . No way are they putting one near me just look at how many have gone on fire , research that |

As long as you're not standing with in three feet directly behind it all day, I wouldn't worry about it and I don't. Now if the head of your child's bed is push up against the wall and directly behind the back of the meter, I'd worry enough to make other arrangements and put up a Faraday barrier either directly behind the meter on the outside and/or on the inside to deflect EMF which is known to cause sleep issues and cancer, even when the frequency is weak in strength or pulse. FACT. |
AxX User ID: 85382556 United States 03/26/2023 08:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | With a smart meter, they can see the power draw of your house, how long it lasts, and at what frequency. With this information, they can see when your refrigerator turns on, if you have a deep freeze, when you turn on lights, when your water heater goes on and off when you take a hot shower, they know when you’re home, what your routine is, and when you’re not home. When you charge your cell phone or if your router is turned on. They can establish a baseline to your unique power consumption, then come knock on your door when you grossly exceed expectations (like starting a microgreens grow company on your residential property, avoiding business taxes) All that information will now be in the hands of your power company, to be sold off to multiple third party companies. Then the government can pay those companies to provide the desired information it wants, circumventing any ‘bothersome’ legal mumbo jumbo. Energy flows where focus goes. Anonymous Coward User ID: 82554391 Netherlands 03/26/2023 08:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's worse than that: the 'smart' meters RESTRICT the flow of everything to your house: no more a/c, no more heat, no more gaz, no more water. You will only get a mini bit, then have to do without the rest of the month. REFUSE IT! Do NOT let them access your house. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 82554391 Netherlands 03/26/2023 08:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I like the smart meter.
