No they aren't the same, gays are fine with their gender but attracted to the same sex. Trans feel they are a different gender than what they are born.

Gay people have a difference in the way their brain considers sexual relationships -- this area of their brain is more like that of the opposite gender (ie, a man has a similar 'sexual relations' brain centre as a woman, thus 'fancies guys').

Transgender individuals have a difference in the way their brain considers self-gender identity -- again, this area in them is more like that of the opposite gender, but it is a different brain area than for sexual relations. Thus a man thinks they're a woman, thus wants to be a woman.

To make it more complex, there's more than one centre of gender identity -- there's the way you see yourself (thus I want to be a woman), there's the way you want others to see you (I want them to see me as a woman) and the social side of things (I want other women to see me as one of them).

There's no certainty that any of these brain centres will all be aligned -- thus it is possible to have a man who wants to be a woman, but who wants to hang out with the guys and have sex with women.

The important bit in all this is 'so what' -- ultimately it might be considered that this is all a fantasy and that they should put up with their birth gender (ie, do what you like to your body, but it is unlikely that you'll be a pretty little thing who has men falling over themselves after you and who has lots of girls wanting to be their best buddy -- thus if it isn't going to work out give up now and just do the best you can with what you've got).

They are the same. Just one level higher. Need to get out more. Some are just straight up dudes you cant tell unless they tell you.
