Whatever Happened To The Neutron Bomb?
In these days of gut-wrenching scenarios of thermonuclear destruction as the logical followup to financial collapse we're hearing of the imminent possible annihiliation of Los Angeles and Chicago by foreign powers intent upon retrieving their investments in the floundering U.S. economy.

But, whatever happened to the NEUTRON bomb? Once upon a time this was hailed as the new, improved "civilized" way to exterminate our own kind... with the obvious added advantage of NOT reducing our major cities to heaps of smoking rubble. That was the WHOLE point: to make it easier for the victors to come strutting into our towns to a largely intact infrasructure and set up shop down the street in the local 7-11 as our new 'deciders.'

It almost seems that neutron bombs are already passe' - which begs the question: if they're old technology... what has now replaced them that we DON'T know about?

We keep hearing that Iran is THIS CLOSE to developing 'the bomb' - what KIND of bomb? And, how many nations already have that old-fashioned Neutron technology?

Sure: those big, bad old thermonuclear monsters ARE bigger and badder... but, their little Neutron brother is FAR more humane, right?

Of course: they can always rely upon Bird Flu! It's far cheaper, easier and damned near as effective a method of genocide... and it's even far more quiet: just the sound of a hacking cough to let you know it's TEOTWAWKI!

They are stockpiled in Neveda. There when and if we need them.

Re: Whatever Happened To The Neutron Bomb?
This intense burst of high-energy neutrons is intended as the principal killing mechanism, although large amounts of heat and blast are also produced. Although neutron bombs are commonly believed to "leave the infrastructure intact", current designs have explosive yields in the kiloton range,[10], the detonation of which would cause heavy destruction through blast and heat effects. A yield of one kiloton is not high for a nuclear weapon, but is still nearly two orders of magnitude (100 times) bigger than the most powerful conventional bombs. The blast from a neutron bomb may be enough to level almost all civilian structures inside the lethal radiation range.[citation needed]

Re: Whatever Happened To The Neutron Bomb?
You didn't answer the core of my question: WHO'S got them and how many? My research indicates that although the U.S. kick-started these diabolical little weapons, they are pretty much common -even outmoded- now.

BTW: even though Neutrons will knock down all buildings in their direct blast pattern... they are still considered "limited-range" weaponry, yes? I didn't mean to suggest that only people would drop in their tracks... although that WAS their original intent... and how they were hailed as the "bombs of the future." Well: that future just may be now.
