Hope that'll be ok with rain.. great thread though... learnt some interesting stuff here. i tried to hose down the roof, it kinda works for a short time, and strapping ice packs to the fans has worked a charm.. but the poster who said its the roof is spot on in my situation. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 67653786 United States 05/25/2019 09:15 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Well this heatwave is underway in AZ, and I am not going to turn on the A/C in April. So what I need are ideas on how to go about (cheaply) blocking the heat from a west facing window. Any ideas? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 661608 LOL close them up inside and outside -literally. just did the annual routine over here, insulated foam panels, then 2 layers insulation, foil, then inside the same along w/ clean cardboard panels tacked in the window frames to keep everything nice and tight...then insulated drapes. works fine. welcome to the cave. and yeah i'm cheap,i carefully remove and store everything around November when the weather finally remains cool then we do have winter but then that westerly exposure is glorious. I also run a 5000 btu window AC basically 24/7 as the humidity here is high-and believe me this 5000 btu unit dehumidifies one half the house, maintains it at 80--i run good fans to keep the air circulating, rarely had to use the central system and use past tense as IT died- will invest in a split for the living room and know it will cool down other areas the same. to install a new central system as the 1 here is 25 years old and inefficient,is not possible right now,so a nice split unit that can heat, cool, circulate and dehumidify will be a godsend . |

The only space I have to work with is on the top. do you think reflective paint would be that effective on metal? The roof garden does look pretty cool though.. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 413488 United States 05/26/2019 10:23 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Window overhangs are a cheap year round solution. The sun is angled higher during summer so overhangs can block heat radiated from the sun during peak hours while still letting heat come in during winter. If you need to go cheaper and don't care about looks then anything blocking the window from the outside works. Internal blinds still transfer heat to the inside air so they are of limited effectiveness. |

Denizen Deplorable 2020 User ID: 77277724 United States 05/26/2019 10:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Forget the aluminum foil ghetto trick. Not worth it. Get a roll of 1.5 mil clear plastic sheeting used for painters drop cloth and quick weather covering. Most painters or hardware box stores have this. Get double sided scotch tape, lots of it. You will need sharp scissors. Also get clear packing tape. Cut sheeting to size of the window frame or molding as neatly as possible. Two extra hands helps. Put double tape around the window on the molding and apply the sheeting as taught as possible to avoid wrinkles so the air pocket is sealed inside the space. Air is a great insulator. To get rid of wrinkles ot to pull it tight, lightly blow a hair drier around the plastic and it will cinch up. The UV/IR window treatment is a good idea. You can additionally add an insulated white curtain sheer that will deflect some heat. Add blackout curtains that also have an insulation value. These can sometimes be found at Big Lots pretty cheap. Exterior storm windows can be purchased with various insulation and reflective value. This gets expensive. There are also interior fitted secondary panes that perform a similar service as to the plastic sheeting above. Exterior storm shutters on the windows is always helpful, but expensive. Or, if you don't mind ghetto looking, some sheets of insulated panel could be cut to serve the purpose. You can plant heat tolerant bushes outside of these sun facing windows. Trees also help shield heat from your house, but that would take you a while to get that growth. In dry areas, a water misting system on your HVAC evaporator coil will increase it's efficiency. Ceiling fans in every room to keep the air flowing. Box fans if needed to pipe air down a hallway. If you are in dry areas, build an evaporate fan system. |

The thing just cooks, its flat. some days you could fry an egg on it. ---------------- You need to block the sun from hitting your roof (or most of it)...the trick is how to do it cheaply. Start cutting down metal street signs and lay them on your roof post side down :D The post will keep the sign an inch off your roof, so the sign will heat up but the heat wont be transferred to your roof Or you could buy the parts yourself (metal fence posts/tubing & sheet metal)...or you could lay gutters upside-down on your roof...or metal garbage can lids.
