how far north is a northerner?

Does Missouri count? Or Kansas?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 653834

Missouri and Kansas are Yankees to a Southerner. They were Union states in the Civil War.

Re: What do you Southerners hate about Northerners?
I'm from Philadelphia and all I hear ever about the South and people there is that they are friendly. Well, I've been to Atlanta, Memphis, New Orleans (and rural parts of Florida, before someone accuses me of only visiting big cities.)

Without exception, every single person I met in the South treated me and my family very, very rudely. The cab drivers, the portes at the hotels, the staff in the restaurants...I realize some of you may be thinking that that is simply a thing in any big city, but, as I said, even in rural Florida people were extremely mean. I admit I come from a town that isn't really noted for being polite. But this was just plain rude, and it flew in the face of everything I've ever heard about the South.

The taxi drivers wouldn't take us anywhere but the airport and would try to run up the meters. The porters wouldn't move our bags without a tip. As far as the waiters and waitresses and just the people in general, they all had a very stuck up attitude. All of the above, by the way, we observed treating the locals much more nicely.

My last job was also owned and operated by a corporation from Virginia. Our warehouse in Philadelphia was actually the only one outside of the South. I was there since it opened, and we had a lot of supervisors and executives from the warehouses in the South come up here to train us. They were all very clannish and only liked to socialize with each other. The ones who were friendly would tell me things like, "The way you people dress up here is so funny" or "The furniture around here is so ugly" (it was a furniture warehouse.) I'd also get speeches on how rude and stuck up people from the North are, and how we all aren't nice enough.

Also, as a whole, even the people from the South who live here now prefer other Southerners. For some reason I think they feel like its a privilege to be from the South. "Its a Southern thing" is something I've heard my whole life but as far as I can tell its northing worth having or admiring.

So forgive this typical "yankee" for his colored attitude but its based on fact.

I agree with you. I had family in Alabama so I was there a lot for a number of years. I didn't experience that famous southern hospitality. I think Midwesterners are friendlier.

I have lived in the North, the South, The East, the West and the Mid-West. I can tell you there is not one right or wrong place to live. To generalize people by geographic location shows the stupidity of the person doing the generalization.

It also shows the lack of education and real-world experience of that person as well as lack of love while growing up. It is sad that someone would say anything bad about the North, South, West, East or Mid-West...it shows how unhappy this person is and how much they have yet to learn.

This type of person needs to travel the world more and experience different countries to see all the different cultures, religions and understand both genders as well.

They don't trust you. You have to live there for a while.

Funny thing while in the Army (I'm retired), I was stationed at Ft Hood and getting ready to retire. My family and I lived in a small town in the hill country in Texas. We had gotten to know a few folks and told them we were moving to Cincinnati. Knowing that I was originally from Louisiana, I was constantly 'talked to' like I was a son of theirs because I was moving to 'Yankee territory'.

Now that I have lived up here for a couple of decades I still sometimes feel like a fish out of water. For the most part they are friendly enough, they are just different.

By the same token, if you go from Texas to say Louisiana it somewhat the same. I've noticed if you go from the Hill Country to NE TN there are a lot of similarities. There is a big difference form NE TN to western TN. Louisiana and western Mississippi are sort of the same. Arkansas and southern Missouri are sort the same. There are even differences in Texas.

I can remember calling someone from Memphis a Yankee when I was young, but I had a really bad accent then.

It's even the same in places like Ohio, Missouri, Michigan, New York, Germany, Korea, SW Asia, California, etc.

The places that are rural generally distrust you until you are there for a while and they get to know you. Once they get to know you most (not all) consider you like family.

BTW, rural Florida is a different cat than most of the South

I lived in New York for 39 years and now have been in Charleston, SC for 5 years. I have found southerners to dislike northerners. They are very polite on the outside (Yes m'am, Yes Sir) but they will talk about you behind your back. They are very discriminating against northerners. In fact, in my neighborhood southern children can only play with other southern children. I think that although the southerners appear very polite by what they say, they are missing something. They don't know how to treat people kindly.

People from the south tend to be stuck up and fake. They are all polite and courteous an then talk about you behind your back. Food is good, but I miss my corn and meat, and of course squeaky cheese. I appreciate the "tell you like it is" attitude up north instead of the "pretend like I like you but I really don't attitude" in the South

Ever heard anyone rave about Minnesota barbeque?

Yea, and I'm a hell of a fan of BBQ being a Memphian. But
have you ever seen a Philly cheesesteak done right down here?

That's true. Oddly enough there is one exception here in Fort Worth. A place called Billadelphia's serves authentic Philly cheesesteaks. He even gets the Amoroso's rolls shipped down. I've never had a cheesesteak in Philly, but my old boss is from PA and he said that it was authentic. Of course the owner of the place is a Philly native, so it doesn't really count. Other than that I've never had anything close here.

Pizza is another one. I've never had a deep dish as good as the ones in Chicago. Even the Uno's chains taste like shit compared to the original one downtown.
 Quoting: JohnnyCarcinogen

In NY and NJ we don't consider deep dish to be real pizza. Thin crust, plain cheese, by the slice. Best ever. Chain pizza is a joke.

Since moving from New York, I've noticed that southerners (especially those from North Carolina), are just jealous and ignorant. They cannot accept the fact that they lost the Civil War. I feel that I do not get the same oppurtunity as these southerners because I'm from out of state and from New York.
