Question for photograpy buffs
I received a Hasselblad camera from a late friend's estate.

I don't care about price (I already know). What I want to know is how good a camera they are from people with experience with them.

if it was a car, it would be a Rolls Royce. They don't make them any better. If you sell it, do some research. the lens alone go for thousands. If you have the bucks (about 10-20 thousand), you can buy a digital back, and have the best digital camera on the planet.

The best money can buy off the shelf. The whole system is designed to a specification with price computed only after the finished product meets that spec.

Some are collectors items and virtually every professional photographer has used them or still uses them.

As a film camera, and a medium format camera (2 1/4"), with Zeiss optics, this camera set the bar when it came to commercial photography. The only downside is they are cumbersome, especially if you don't have a prism finder. The backs, and accesories are very expensive but will last forever. You won't get a clearer picture anywhere, unless you go to a large format view camera.

Its the camera they adapted for the moon mission, and others. I think Annie Leibowitz still uses one. All of the world class photgraphers used them. Today, everyone has gone digital, its so much more cost effective. To go digital commercially with a Hassleblad, it will cost you small fortune.

They are good, but don't believe all the hype. And of course you have an MF (Medium Format) film camera, which are gradually being replaced by digital and you won't find that size film except in pro photo stores. Film is expensive, and more expensive to process/scan/print. It's really only an enthusiast's or professional's camera. Sell it.

And a lot depends on the model. Hasselblad have made a dog or two (just like Leica, Zeiss, Olympus..)

Thanks for the responses. And to the last poster, the camera is an HD3 II.

I had a chance to look around and WOW! what a camera!

You know those vintage look portraits people love.

Are those done with antique Hasselblads?

I think that look is fantastic for composition.

We're all jealous now. What a great friend you had OP. That is one impressive digital camera. I thought the Sony Alhp 900 with Ziess optics, and 24 MP was over the top. But its a mere $5000, and nowhere in the same league as a Hasselblad.

I'm not into photography (hence the reason for asking about the camera). Frankly, it could stay in the case it came in. You may feel a "leg pull" but, I'm learning about the camera so I can know more about my friend's life away from me (I hadn't seen her in 8 years, but I had talked to her). And yeah, she was interesting. She was a free spirit,eclectic,eccentric...She lived and died doing her own thing.

BTW,I also have a Nazi-era harmonica left to me by an uncle who died before my birth....Does that mean I know about harmonicas, how to play them or I'm a Nazi? No. It's about a connection to a person.

I don't expect you to understand why I'm asking. Hell, I don't care if you think I don't have the camera at all.

This is about honoring someone who I'll never see again.

My suggestion: Find a GOOD camera store with a knowledgable staff, see what books they suggest on beginning photography and see if you can't honor your lost friend with some neat images of your own? You may find a really satisfying hobby.

I'm not trying to denigrate her, or you. But it is very odd.

The thing is, such a camera is pretty much completely wasted on anyone who isn't going to use it professionally. It's VERY BIG, the output files are enormous, and if you don't understand photography you have a huge learning curve ahead of you - the HD3 manual ain't written for beginners..

It's a bit like willing a Harley Davidson to a little old granny who doesn't drive or like bikes... Pretty much pointless.

So, perhaps the person thought you would do some worthy things with your new Hasselblad - are you perhaps not admitting to being an accomplished photographer, or did you lead her to believe you were one? (O;

Hence the request, show us some good images.. or give it/sell it to someone who will.

Always wanted a Super-Wide...

Hasselblad digital? Almost heretical, seems medium format is all about the big negative and archival prints.

Undoubtedly the finest system camera there ever was. Rather prefer the Mamiya RB67 and classical twin lens reflex, but who would not like a Hasselblad?

I guess unless you are making your own printing emulsion, the darkroom age is over.

It sure isn't ;)

Still lots of film left and new films being developed, just because Kodachrome is being discontinued doesn't mean film is dead :)

I said it before and I'll say it again, I don't know beans from buckshot about photography. What I've learned in the last few hours is, this camera needs to be used. It's like leaving a Porsche in a garage, it's just wrong.

My family did ask me to sell it, that seemed wrong .

Your suggestion of giving it away, is the way to go. It may be, that she knew I would find a better home for it.

What better way to honor her, than to donate it to the college she graduated from. They will have the means and know how(I sure as Hell don't) for the camera's upkeep and she will live through the art/photography of others.
