[link to www.wired.com] Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25292202 ...Costa Rica The RSN in Costa Rica released a report about changes at some of the most active volcanoes in the country after the M7.6 earthquake that struck the country last month. Although the direct connection between large earthquakes and eruptions is not settled, the RSN has noted that some Costa Rican volcanoes have experience heightened activity after large earthquakes (> M6.5), so they felt it was important to check to see what changes the active volcanoes of Costa Rica may have experienced since the earthquake. Overall, it looks like Turrialba, Poas and Rincon de la Vieja saw an increase in fumarolic activity (degassing) and Poas may have even had a small phreatic eruption in the days after the earthquake. Arenal and Irazu seem to not had any changes since the earthquake – however, one should take this cautiously as only a month has passed since the earthquake occurred... New release about Iceland eq swarm by Icelandic Met Office [link to en.vedur.is] Earthquake activity offshore North Iceland continues Update 23.10.2012 ... The analysis of the M5.6 main shock revealed a normal-faulting source mechanism (downwards movement), which indicates it to be linked to the extension of the Eyjafjaroarall graben system and not directly to the Husavik Flatey Fault, which shows horizontal strike-slip movements. It is neither possible to estimate how long this activity will be ongoing, nor can further earthquakes of M>4 be excluded. This seismic sequence is located close to the western end of the Husavik Flatey Fault and it can not be ruled out that it will effect the stress field of this fault. A rifting episode during the Krafla fires 1975-1984 caused a stress decrease on the Husavik Flatey Fault and stress is accumulating on the fault system again since then. Deformation measurements (GPS) reveal that the Husavik Flatey Fault has accumulated enough stress for an earthquake around M6.8 (Metzger o.fl., 2011) The strongest earthquakes known on the fault were around M7, e.g. 1755 and 1872 in the Skjalfandi bay. |

In 1992. Heard Island's remote location means any eruptions are unlikely to bother anyone, as the region has no history of colossal, world-shaking, events. Penguins and expeditions that plan to visit the islands are, however, in jeopardy. Two of the latter are scheduled for the near future. In 2013 a solo adventurer plans to sail to the islands and then kayak ashore. |

[link to icelandreview.com] The Civil Protection Department’s council of scientists met yesterday and concluded that in the region currently subject to seismic activity, strong earthquakes occur two to three times per century. Strong earthquakes are also known to accompany series of earthquakes. The one currently ongoing is the most powerful in 20 years in the respective region, the council pointed out. It should also be kept in mind that a large earthquake on the Husavik-Flatey fault might trigger another large earthquake either on the same fault or the Grimsey fault, which lies to the northwest of Kopasker |

This cone is no small feature – the initial mapping suggests it is 240 meters tall, reaching within 1,100 meters of the surface. The pumice from Havre is still drifting in the seas near the Kermadec and will likely do so for years (or until they make landfall somewhere). However, it is great to see that our sleuthing through remote sensing has now been confirmed by direct observation of the seamount and the product of the eruption. |
