And was wondering what they did there and when? Quoting: PNW2010Not to many knew about that place, and less have ever been there. I was there in the early 90's as a contractor. Man that place was cool in its own right. I did, but everything I saw is confidential. Big flat treeless rock with fun caves, and Cobra Ball & Cobra Dane. Huge f'ing radar array, and poor guys that hadn't seen a female in a year. |

There were over a thousand guys there when I was there in 1969-1970. Considering how long it was open, and that a tour was only a year, you gotta figure there were THOUSANDS of guys (and later, gals, I guess) stationed on Shemya. If you had to do a remote tour, this was the place to do it. Big, lots of activities, mail twice a week! Wow. Everybody says the same thing - they hated it when they were there but all look back fondly on the experience. Besides, it beat Nam. Geo. |

Worked snow removal in the winter and for 5099th civil engineering sq. doing hazardous material disposal. Actually, I worked all the remote sites, King Salmon, Galena, and, most all of the old White Alice sites located in Alaska. Believe it or not I had some really good times on the Rock. Partying at Rosies, the Ebony Cliff, NCO club. We had a great crew of guys and we probably would have had fun at a Russian Gulag, but I have a lot of fond memories of the time I spent there.[youtube] |
