SHEMYA AFB... Anybody been there before? If so, when?
Just looking to see if others here on GLP have been to Shemya Island. And was wondering what they did there and when?

Not to many knew about that place, and less have ever been there.

I was there in the early 90's as a contractor. Man that place was cool in its own right.

I did, but everything I saw is confidential. Big flat treeless rock with fun caves, and Cobra Ball & Cobra Dane. Huge f'ing radar array, and poor guys that hadn't seen a female in a year.

interesting the Island is home of One of the most recognizable features of the island is the COBRA DANE radar system. This radar was built in 1976 and brought on-line in 1977 for the primary mission of intelligence gathering in support of verification of the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) II agreement.

Huh?
There were over a thousand guys there when I was there in 1969-1970.
Considering how long it was open, and that a tour was only a year, you gotta figure there were THOUSANDS of guys (and later, gals, I guess) stationed on Shemya.

If you had to do a remote tour, this was the place to do it. Big, lots of activities, mail twice a week! Wow.

Everybody says the same thing - they hated it when they were there but all look back fondly on the experience.

Besides, it beat Nam.

Was there on and off from 1981 to 1992. Worked snow removal in the winter and for 5099th civil engineering sq. doing hazardous material disposal. Actually, I worked all the remote sites, King Salmon, Galena, and, most all of the old White Alice sites located in Alaska. Believe it or not I had some really good times on the Rock. Partying at Rosies, the Ebony Cliff, NCO club. We had a great crew of guys and we probably would have had fun at a Russian Gulag, but I have a lot of fond memories of the time I spent there.[youtube]

I was there on April 6, 1993, just one day. I was on board of China Eastern Airlines MD-11 jet liner en-routed from Shanghai to Los Angeles. The jet experienced severe oscillation at 35,000 ft of altitude that caused more than 60 passengers severed injured, and two died. The jet forced landed on Shemya after hour and half struggled in air. The injured passengers and I were taken to hospitals in Anchorage AK by USAF C-141 for treatment. We are grateful to the help from U.S. Arm forces personnel on the island that night, our lives were saved. Cary C. Chen, Los Angeles CA.

Was stationed there from 6/73-6/74. The wind (Hawk) was so strong in the winter we had to hold on to ropes when walking outside from building to building. Penny and Duke were our "family" there. Worked at AAFJOG. Great mission. The place has changed a bit - especially Building 600. Far better now.

I was there 1962-63, USAF, worked for the base commander in the orderly room. I remember a mascot huskey named Boozer. Have a photo of him with a buddy of mine. Actually enjoyed my stay there. No complaints. We built a party house there from one of the buildings abandoned in WWII, called it the Pacific View Lodge, as it was on the cliff side overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Believe it or not, this 2X4 island hosted 20,000 troops and civilians during WWII. Of course, there was an important battle with the Japanese 50 miles away on the island of Attu, the last island in the Aleutian chain.
