PRESTO FROM SIDC - RWC BELGIUM Mon May 24 2010, 1251 UT

An eruption in the long filament channel in the northern hemisphere (the center of the channel is located around N20W10) was detected by SOHO/EIT starting from 17:00 UT on May 23. It was accompanied by extended coronal dimmings and a post-eruptive arcade. An associated long-duration B1.4 flare peaked at 18:43 UT. At the moment of writing the LASCO data is not available, so it is impossible to determine if the eruption was accompanied by a halo CME. However, the associated CME was detected by SECCHI/COR2 onboard both STEREO spacecraft starting from 17:54 UT. The estimated CME plane-of-the-sky speed is around 350 km/s.Due to the position of the CME source region across the central meridian (as seen from the Earth) and angular extent of the CME crossing the ecliptic plane, we expect the corresponding ICME to arrive to the Earth late on May 26 - early on May 27. According to the SOHO/MDI and SOHO/EIT data, the configuration of the resulting magnetic cloud could be NWS, i.e. the southward interplanetary magnetic field is situated at the rear part of the cloud. Therefore, the resulting geomagnetic disturbance will probably not be above the K = 6 level. Currently the Earth is inside the slow (310 km/s) solar wind flow with weak (2-3 nT) interplanetary magnetic field magnitude. The geomagnetic conditions will remain quiet in the coming hours.

i like watching the sun here n there- because its actions coordinate with what happens here on earth. even if something happens Up there- and doesnt Hit earth- it still has effects. but i am getting sick of people- every time something happens on the sun they yell "the grid is guna get fried"..... we have no way of telling "the grid will be fried" until the grid IS fried... we can only Guess....

SIZZLING SUNSPOT: Yesterday, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) peered into the dark heart of sunspot 1072 and found it sizzling with activity. Click on the image to set the scene in motion:

The curvaceous arcs in this extreme ultraviolet (171 Å) image are magnetic flux tubes filled with million-degree plasma. Occasionally, a magnetic instability causes an explosion, a minor solar flare, which appears in the movie as a brief flash of light. None of these B-class flares was strong enough to effect Earth; they were merely photogenic.

According to NOAA forecasters, sunspot 1072 harbors energy for flares 100 times stronger than this, and there is a 10% chance of such an M-class eruption during the next 24 hours. Shortwave radio blackouts, sudden ionospheric disturbances, and some fantastic movies from SDO could be in the offing. Stay tuned.

Mild CME, Only a B1.3(1.4) class flare, nothing news worthy there.

yes, I believe it is the lower left stuff that we need to worry about, and I have seen worse ones. we will be ok.

If indeed Lasco is down as purported by one poster, STEREO announced that there was the biggest CME in 15 years on May 23 BUT ALSO that it was directed opposite from earth. So we have averted this disaster.

STEREO also claims that they expect unprecedented solar activity.

ADVICE:

I think there is enough occuring on this planet, man-made and natural, for you to be prepared.

1- Purchase as much non BPA bottled water as you can--it will preserve for up to 2 years.
2- Purchase long shelf-life foods (pasta lasts up to 2 years, brown rice up to 1, legumes for a long time)
3- Purchase matches and candles (no lead wicks)
4- Make sure you have lots of reading materials and board games
5- If you can afford it, buy a BBQ for the summer and a wood-burning stove for the winter
6- Store a few extra cans of Propane and Gas (cars may not work)
7- Have a good bicycle
8- Have cash on hand in smaller bills $10, $20--$500 to $2,000
9- Cleaning materials such as vinegar and baking soda (avoid the toxic stuff)
10- Meds preferably natural--tea tree oil, oregano oil, colloidal silver, hydrogen peroxide, bandages, natural vitamins/minerals/amino-acids/enzymes---load up on high quality Vitamin D in huge quantities

Once you have these basics,you will feel calmer, ready for whatever comes first.

You will be more useful to everyone if you share the challenges coming with everyone, calmly and positively.

Although I would miss my A/C, my hot water heater and my water pump if the grid goes down, I will not miss the abuse of technology for control of the human race. Technology has simply gone too far.

PRESTO FROM SIDC - RWC BELGIUM Sun May 23 2010, 1427 UT

Solar activity is low. The solar wind speed is low around 370 km/s and the southward component of the magnetic filed is turning positive. STEREO COR2 data show a large CME on the back side of the Sun at 00h09 UT. As it is not directed to the Earth, the geomagnetic conditions are expected to remain quiet. The all quiet alert stays valid.
