In the town of Bethulia in Judea, during the war between the Jews and Assyrians,
there lived a pious and beautiful woman named Judith. Her beloved
husband had died three years before and Judith had never came out of her
mourning. She no longer wore her beautiful clothing and fine jewelry, preferring to
dress very plainly. Judith sat all, day on low benches, praying and studying Torah.
She fasted on Mondays and Thursdays and lived modestly off the money her
husband had left her.

The Assyrian army camped outside of Bethulia and started to lay siege
to the town. No food or water could teach it; the people soon began to feel the
pinch. When hunger and thirst grew unbearable, the town’s leaders held a large
meeting. It was decided that if God did not do something to relieve the siege within
5 days, it would mean that He wanted the people to surrender, and they would.

When word reached Judith of the people’s decision, she, rose from her
mourning and want to see the town leaders immediately. “How can you be judges
of God’s will?’’ she challenged them. “I have a plan for saving our town from
hateful Assyrian rule. Just let me out of the gate before daybreak.” Having
great respect for Judith, the leaders agreed. Judith went home to prepare for her
mission.

Judith changed back into her most beautiful clothes and adorned herself
lavishly. She packed kosher dishes, food and wine in a large bag for her mission.
After taking her Siddur she left her home. By daybreak Judith entered the Assyrian
camp that was besieging Bethulia.

As soon as the Assyrian soldiers saw her they were taken by her beauty
and asked what she wanted. Judith told then that she wanted to join them, for the
people of her town were planning to forsake God. They welcomed her eagerly,
knowing how pleased the general Holofernes would be to have such a lovely
young addition to his forces. Judith asked for only one privilege: that she be
allowed to leave the camp early every morning to wash in the river and say her
morning prayers. The request was granted.

As soon as Holofernes heard about Judith he tried to meet and be with
her. After refusing his messenger many times, Judith finally agreed to come to a
late supper in his tent. She told the messenger, however, that she must bring her
own food to the feast. The general had ordered many delicacies and wines for their
meal but Judith unpacked her own meal from a large bag. She politely insisted on
eating only her own kosher food from her own dishes. Holofernes ate heartily and
drank even more heartily. Soon he became very drunk and then fell soundly asleep
on his couch.

When Judith saw him doze and heard his breathing grow regular, she
quickly pulled his sword out of its sheath. With all of her strength she cut off his
head. She wrapped it in Holoferne’s bed canopy and tucked it into the bag she had
carried her dinner in.

Just before daybreak. Judith left the general’s tent and walked to the river as
usual, carrying her bag and Siddur. Several soldiers smiled and waved to her as she
went. This time, however, she did not come back to the Assyrian camp. She
continued walking up the hill to her town of Bethulia. When her famished
townspeople saw her coming they opened the gate so Judith could slip in.

A few moments later, the entire Assyrian camp was alerted by a great
cry of celebration coming from their victims in Bethulia. They could also see the
severed head of man displayed just outside the gate. Two soldiers called in to the
general’s tent to arouse him after his night of festivities. When there was no
answer, they entered the tent. Then they saw Holoferne’s blood-drenched body
with the head missing. A great cry of woe went up from the Assyrian tent. In a
terrible fright they packed their entire encampment and fled without leaving a
trace. The siege was broken! Judith had triumphed!

Thus was the town or Bethulia saved by the bravery, intelligence, and piety
of Judith.

“Propaganda Due or P2 was a Masonic lodge operating under the jurisdiction of the Grand Orient of Italy from 1877 to 1976 (when its charter was withdrawn), and a pseudo-Masonic or “black” or “covert” lodge operating illegally from 1976 to 1981.
