Casing, BOP... Major action now! We are screwed. The well is collapsing from the inside and there is nothing BP or anyone is going to be able to do to fix that. Now we have to wait for the relief wells to be finished. No choice. Even if they could cap the top now, it would just blow out of the sea floor. "God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787 |

It wouldn't be so devastating to cause tsunamis, since a tsunami it would require a huge cave the size of the Gulf itself to cause a significant tsunami probably also the cave might slowly start to erode in but the problem is WTF might be trapped under neath the ocean floor inside that oil/gas deposit. The government needs to check this ASAP and issue warnings, no matter what the initial costs might look like! |

It's like watching a 40 mile wide comet heading for its final impact on earth. Somethings are simply outside of the ability of man to stop or control. Governments and corporate spokesmen can talk all they wish, but in the end are really helpless to do much of anything about it. Like shooting nukes at a 40 mile wide comet, or drilling relief wells into a fragmenting pipe, all we plebeians can do is just wait for the end. Sorry for my Voltaire channeling, but it's how this entire situation strikes me. |

This is my initial thought as well... 450 Tons for the BOP alone, not including all the other crap. If the casing is compromised that is going to weaken the underlying structure. Need to find SHR and others on here that can comment on what they think is going on. weight at surface gravity has little to do with weight in the water especially at depth. have to account for buoyant forces. |

The "buoyant forces" on 450 tons of steel at that depth would be negligable. wrong: the density of water DOES increase as one goes deeper into the water. Not by huge amounts as water is basically an incompressible fluid but it does occur. but as you go deeper, your volume (the amount of the water you displace) stays the same -- but the weight of the water you displace goes up. Thus, the buoyant force increases as you go deeper into the water. Last Edited by White Dragon on 06/08/2010 12:23 AM |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 992795Doesn't matter if the entire fucking thing falls over as this leak is not going to stop until the relief wells (plural) are finished or the damn thin is depleted. All the rest is just a dog and pony show to prove BP's valiant attempts at "stopping" the flow. It's all bullshit. I agree, they knew it wouldnt work in the first place. |

No one has ever seen a perfect circle, nor a perfectly straight line, yet everyone knows what a circle and a straight line are. Perceived circles or lines are not exactly circular or straight, and true circles and lines could never be detected since by definition they are sets of infinitely small points. |

Bouyancy increases with the density of the fuid the object is submerged in. Water is an "almost" non-compressable fuid. (less than 1% over 100 meters depth. So with no reall increase in density, the BOP would weigh almost the same at depth than at surface. So...no...not wrong |
