There is a failure of the safety valves in line and the shut down mechanism of the BOP itself. There are fractures or "fracs" in the sea bed releasing oil and gas. What I don't understand, or maybe just missed it totally, is how the actual rig caught fire and what caused the explosion that cost 11 lives. What was the series of events that exploded the rig and caused the damage? With all the info I can find I have been unable to get a grip on the explanation for the rigs destruction. The way I understand it all damage occured below the water and much of it below the sea bed. Thank you for helping an idiot find this information!

As a result of the loss of downward pressure (sea water being much lighter than drilling mud), the well 'kicked' releasing a large amount of methane gas. The gas traveled up the well bore, pushing out the mud and sea water as it went. On top, at the platform, the methane gas was released. It remains unclear why an emergency cutoff switch was not activated to shut off the power on top of the rig. I think the speculation was that when the methane as came in contact with the diesel generators on the rig (which were still operating), there was a massive explosion.
