Dont know what to think of the microbe image ...
it looks so "fluffy" ...lol... and the shape at first site almost looks like antarctica, but not when you look closer.

Remarcable that JPL backed out of their plans.
What wonders me and could be misinterpreted is if that "concern over environmental contamination" was 1) fear and caution for contamination of this pure and pristine eco-system under the ice, or 2) fear to contaminate our inviroment with the bacteria found there.

To me 1) is the most logical and feels the most true. Coz the already took ice-core samples and brought those bacteria in labs to study them : "(judging from the unique microorganisms that scientists were actually able to culture in the United States and Russia, when retrieved from their icy prison)" That procedure could have 'contaminated' our enviroment allready. And if those black-ops really drilled for samples themselves (and used up that salt), they have possibly brought up -and into contact with the arctic air- potential premordial bacteria and microbes.
So that is why point 1 makes the most sence to me : they dont wanna contaminate this pristine enviroment with our known microbes, they wanna keep it as sterile as possible.

Experiment was to try to compare a couple of methods currently used to measure Earth's electrical properties.

The experiment is not for one specific purpose, it is a generalised experiment. The data can be used for a number of outcomes such as -

Using Earth's electromagnetics so you can navigate

You can work out areas where 'sweet spots' for transmission towers can be built, or the opposite.

You can find large ore deposits due to the electromagnetic interferance.....

The experiment was showing one method was better than the currently employed method as it is much more accurate and was less prone to outside interference.

The reason it was conducted in Antarctica, an underground was to try to eliminate as much interferance as possible.
