Could some of it be used to clear ice off pathways, and to make it easier to move vehicles?
It's possible, but unlikely, at least out in the open. Salt sprinkled on the surface does melt ice, but only above certain temperatures. When the temperature falls below about -10 C, it's no longer effective, and if it reaches -18 C, even ocean water freezes regardless of the salt in it. That being said, however, the level of concentration does matter, and higher concentrations mixed in with the soil might be more effective. But, how do you mix it into the soil when the soil is frozen solid?

RAND's Public Health Systems and Preparedness (PHSP) initiative been doing work on these types of issues for many years and has a body of work which is relevant and applicable to the current situation in the Gulf.



If anyone thinks that the Rand corp-o-rats are helping out with the Gulf situation, I wish they'd explain how and what is being done.
