Epic hmmmm I can't see it. Time consuming yes the story line just drifts along then the end again "OMG" a color fest even my daughter made a comment "is anything going to happen daddy" Nope! | CleverMoniker User ID: 15254278 05/06/2012 11:34 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | 2001 had plenty of meaning. The monoliths were placed by aliens to spurn spontaneous evolution by influencing minds, they were essentially 'broadcasting' ideas and intellectual evolution. When the monkeys encountered the first one it was broadcasting the idea to use tools. That one single event triggered the entire rise of man. When man found the monolith on the moon, it activated the Jupiter monolith, as man was now ready for it's final evolution. During the space mission, HAL began to go crazy because as they approached the Jupiter monolith, it's broadcast began to affect him. It was designed for a human/organic intelligence, not HAL, but since he had rudimentary intelligence it affected him as well, with bad results. In the book, the Jupiter monolith was actually a stargate, that sent Dave to an alien world to meet the makers of the monoliths. In Kubrick's version however, when Dave reached the Jupiter monolith, it evolved him to a higher life form, to meet the higher dimensional beings who created the monolith. The crazy light show we see is Kubrick's way of visually illustrating Dave's mind being evolved, his perception of dimension and reality shifting drastically, and his mind struggling to comprehend it. The final mindfuck scenes, are Dave existing in the higher dimension, dying and letting go of his earthly body and who he thought he was, at which point he is reborn as a new being. It couldn't be more meaningful, and awesome. I'm sorry there weren't wookies and spaceships blowing up, but if you watch it in the right frame of mind, it's a pretty meaningful film. |
