"One Second After" is a novel that gives an idea what life will be like after an EMP strike. Basically, bend over and kiss your ass goodbye. 90% dead after the first year.

lol. survivalist can only go for a few months tops in tough conditions. non- survivalists reading books may as well read this one. or the bible, because they don't have a chance.

is just as good, IF YOU GO OUT AND FOLLOW THE BOOK. You NEED to go out WITH OUT FOOD for about a WEEK OR 2 AT A TIME.

if you have the time, go 3 to 4 weeks. But you better be serious.

After collecting stuff for Y2K the best book I found for everything from making candles from various fats, to making a hammock out of blankets, venting with chickenwire and straws, making flour from seeds.

Oh and making it tho a nuke strike.

Boy Scouts manual 1960 edition, Backwoods Home magazine especially the anthologies, and the Backwoodsman magazine similar name but different publishers. The magazines try or demonstrate the ideas or info presented. The boy scout manual that I have, has many things in it like that in the SAS book all in all it comes down to practicing the skills of shelter, water, food, knowledge of the land.

what you have to be is self sufficent. very very different. as a survivalist i probably couldn't go more than a few weeks. its very hard. but as a self sufficent i can go indefinetly.

You can have all the books in the world but if you dont practice the skills involved, you might as well kiss your ass goodbye anyways. When TSHTF is not the time to start practicing...

Re: **WHAT IS THE BEST SURVIVAL BOOK TO HAVE WHEN TSHTF?** EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW!!
i have almost every survival book ever written. most center on how to survive a few nights in the woods when you are lost, some more on the shtf. all have something useful, you do need more than one. "how to survive the end of the world as we know it" by rawles is very good, as is "when all hell breaks loose" by lundin. the deyo book is great, lots of lists.
i definately agree that being on the land NOW learning self sufficiency is much better than most arm chair survivalists who live in the big cities plans to "escape"!

The Only Books you will ever need:

The Foxfire Books

With nearly 9 million copies in print, The Foxfire Book and its eleven companion volumes stand memorial to the people and the vanishing culture of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, brought to life for readers through the words of those who were born, lived their lives, and passed away there—words collected by high school students who wanted to be a part of their community and preserve their heritage. All 12 volumes in the regular series are anthologies of Foxfire Magazine articles written by Rabun County high school students over the magazine's 40-year history, usually expanded through follow-up interviews and other research.

Get them while you can.

Re: **WHAT IS THE BEST SURVIVAL BOOK TO HAVE WHEN TSHTF?** EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW!!
READING about survival has NOTHING to do with ACTUAL SURVIVAL !

One NEEDS a Nuclear Blast Shelter; place TO survive the initial radiation/radioactive fallout. THEN, without a Survey Meter and the knowledge to use one, you will STILL probably DIE !

HOWEVER, IF you can pry the lid off one of the MANY city/town 'sewer/electric' underground, cast iron containers, climb down 8-10 feet, that has both sewer/steam and electric lines running through them, that should provide some protection from fallout AND, your 'fellow man'.
One needs a minimum of 2 days in a fallout shelter BEFORE coming out (radiation levels DROP to minor levels in LESS than 48 hours), IF there has been NO FURTHER fallout from secondary attacks, MAINLY west of your location ( winds are BASICLY West to East in USA ).

To MANY talkers; NOT enough DOERS ! Sad, really sad.

Someone mentioned "Backwoodsman" magazine. EXCELLENT! Been buying it for many years. Available even at my Wallyworld lately. Highly reccomended.

There is quite a bit of stuff in the public domain that you can find if you know what to look for. I have a collection of PDFs from a lot of the real old timers from the turn of the last century. Trappers, hunters and mountain men that wrote guides to living outdoors.
If you're going lone wolf, this is the kind of stuff that might really help you.

Some particulars to search for:
Camping and Woodcraft by Horace Kephart. (1904?)
Camp Life in the Woods by W. Hamilton Gibson (1881)
Woodcraft by Nessmuk (George Sears) (1890's)

Of course their equipment lists are pretty dated.
But their ideas and methods are not.

Lots of good stuff on utube. It's no substitute but you can learn a lot about fire making, first aid, building shelters etc. Do a search on utube for whatever you want to learn. Perhaps start with fire making.

Really, it will save your life! When Homeland Security shows up at your doorstep, you just show them the calendar, and they'll think you're to insane to bother with and leave you alone.

One of the best books I've read on survival was 'Naked into the Wilderness' , its geared towards individuals who want more then just the skill to survive but also thrive in a primitive situation . But of course, its all theoretical until you go out and do it ...practice, practice, practice .

Re: **WHAT IS THE BEST SURVIVAL BOOK TO HAVE WHEN TSHTF?** EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW!!
Best books to have when the shit has hit the fan? That's easy, these are books of a How-To nature that show you ways to do things you haven't done before.

The first 100 issues of Mother Earth News come to mind. The Kurt Saxon Books come to mind. Formulary books come to mind. With everything else that's been written to show you how to do something you never had to do for yourself.

But, the best survival books are those that help you see the need to plan your location, your strategy, tools you need, along with gear, supplies etc. Without a plan, you'll have nothing more than what you can recognize as beneficial. This means you'll likely miss seeing all the regular items you now own that can do you lots of good...

Best overall survivalist book I ever read was Life After Doomsday by Bruce Clayton PHD. Best survivalist fiction is Lucifer's Hammer and Alas Babylon.

Best book to get for free is Nuclear War Survival Skills by Cresson Kearny. free download at www.ki4u.com. Also get their info on using topical idine solutions like $3 bottle betadine to prevent thyroid cancer.

Clayton's book was pretty widely published. I like it best because of its scenario chapter that guides you in considering all the types of disasters that could affect each region and the old but still useful information on target sites by each state. Many of the target bases and facilities are still in operation, though base closures have supposedly also removed some from the list.

I have several threads "Lester On Survival" and "Survival Guns" on this site; plus others that could give you some ideas as well.

Basically, you're looking for data to help you understand how you can become self-sufficient and capable of living without elaborate infrastructure dependencies. The basics are Staying Warm, Dry, Hydrated, Fed, and able to Defend what is yours; life and property.

Good luck!
