My tap water tastes like bleach all of a sudden. Any way to get the taste out?
All of a sudden, last week my tap water started smelling strongly of bleach. I mean like a bleach bottle. Is this dangerous? I am not rich, is there a simple way to get the taste out? Please advise.

Let it sit a while in an open pitcher to off-gas it before you drink it.

Leave some of it sit out for awhile. The chlorine will evaporate out of the water. Also call your water company and they might be able to explain why they may have increased the chlorine content.

Use that water to mop the floors.

This used to happen to me all the time. I'd just let the water run for a little bit and it'd usually clear up.

You bet. I communicate with my water company on things like that.

Too much chlorine. Just filter it with a Berkey or RO filter. You should know better than to drink unfiltered tap water anyhow.

Boiling doesn't filter contaminants out of the water, it only kills micro organisms, boiling water will evaporate some of it off further concentrating the substances dissolved in the water.

You need to filter it by a process such as reverse osmosis, distil it or infact filter it with something like a carbon filter.

Be careful. Closer to the city water in Knoxville is horrible. It comes out of the Tennessee River near downtown. Get on a boat and go up and down past UT stadium and the corrections center and look at that water. It's literally sewage water.

Move up toward Blaine and Rutledge, commute, and drink the well water. It's 10000x better for you, but can be full of lime in some places.

Those Brita pitcher filters get the chlorine out to some extent. I use one of those. The cartridges last longer than they say, if you are just one person using it.

If you want the cheap and easy route, get a Britta pitcher or other carbon filter system.

You can't be serious? I suppose you think the fluoride, chemicals, and heavy metals will disappear as well. You can distill the water but need to add beneficial minerals back into it.

I use a counter-top water filter along with an omnifilter cb-3 for water drinking... will never drink straight from the tap again.

chlorine will evaporate from water by letting it sit. Poster is right.. if you want to get rid of just the chlorine, put it in a container and let it sit a couple of days and it will evaporate.

Poor people do poor people things, and rich people do rich people things.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

when you rob Paul to give to Peter ... ... ... you will always get Peters support!

I've been on all the lakes and rivers up there, and let me tell ya; Most of them I would drink water straight out of. I went and put in downtown on the TR early one 4th of July to watch the fireworks later on and thought I would fish all day until then. Not only is there trash on every bank extending a foot into the river along the whole thing, I had to try and not hook dirty diapers. It was so disgusting I didn't stay. I left and went to Cherokee, then watched fireworks from the mountain overlook.

I have been using a Berkey

This OP.

I have city water and it also has a bad smell and taste. The berkey, with a fluoride filter added, takes away the chlorine and most of the fluoride.

If your water is like that, then it stands to reason that any water coming from the water plant will be the same. Therefore if the water people do show up at your home, they will not find anything wrong with your water.

Bottom line - Buy a Berkey.

Isn't adding a small amount of bleach to water supposed to help clean it of dangerous impurities????

Like a toxic leak of something or another into water table???

For chlorine, you simply need to let the water 'breathe' in an open container at room temp. The bleach will evaporate in a few hours. This obviously doesn't deal with other impurities, but it answers your question.
