The cool thing about aquaponics is you don't need to buy fertilizer. It's pretty much self sustaining.

I should get my buddy on this site, he has a pretty good indoor aquaponics garden.

I think every house should come with a greenhouse attachment in the back, and every apartment building should have a full roof greenhouse on the top floor instead of some rich asshole taking the whole space for himself!

For the apartment, give rent discounts to people who help grow stuff and have every apartment get it's share of fresh produce each harvest!

As for aquaponics, that's a big harder but same concept!

you said it, start up costs acide, to feed a family of four the power will cost you about the same as runing 3 100watt bulbs 24/7! and that includs a night time light over the water to atract bugs for the fish to eat, and if you have a worm farm and a few ant nests as well feeding the fish will cost you almost nill!

These should be thought of as season extenders. You can easily extend your grow season thirty days in the spring and another thirty to forty five in the fall. An idea I never pursued was some sort of fold-up design or perhaps a hinged design.
