Small earthbound CME.
There's a small CME on it's way, along with a fair amount of solar wind from sunspot group 1147 and surrounding active region.

Sunspot rash below 1147 now name as sunspot group 1149, Most of the solar wind coming at us is from this.

Likely to arrive 25/26th.

It's been coming off all day from the constant flares [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

It's nothing to worry yourself about, but I thought I would point it out before someone else who would just make it seem more 'doomy' than it really is.

There is also some information of the growing sunspot group on [link to spaceweather.com]

Best viewed here: [link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov] and updating movie for the 22nd [link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov] Yes there are data gaps.

To view the flares please visit [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] Start: 2011-01-21 00:00:00 End: 2011-01-22 02:00:00 Best viewed on AIA 304 (red). You'll notice most of the flares are on the growing sunspot 'rash' that spaceweather mentioned.

The puppies are fine (the one in the pic isn't mine).

This one is mine: [link to i788.photobucket.com] He's grown a lot since then and has some nice big pearly whites now. Also haven't uploaded the other puppy yet.

Thanks OTOC. Been watching this.

Nice to have you post early!

Am wondering if I can ask you a question unrelated? On the Magnetosphere simulation site there is also a simulation of the ionospheric convection. Can you tell me what the black circlular line/lines are representing? Not that I don't have some understanding, just hear alot of stuff from others and want to hear it from someone who knows.

I believe that it is potential electric conductivity.

But not certain, nict don't really explain it in detail anywhere. [link to www2.nict.go.jp]

So I had to work from that and literally just saw it as potential electric currents.

It's not a chart I really bother with though so never looked into it much, I watch the auroral activity over here: [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

It gives the same results except that auroral activity is based on satellite fly-overs instead of computer generated predictions based on raw data from ace.

Nope.

Although the flares might interfere [link to www.n3kl.org]

But they're still small flares and there's not been a radiation storm.

So overall I'd say... no.

Just see if you can line any of the times up.

Thanks, I've been looking at this for a very long time but could never find a real explanation anywhere when I searched. I don't feel so stupid now. I knew I could count on you for honesty. I think your thought on it being the Electric Potential is correct as the current nict.go simulation matches that of the electric potential map at: [link to www2.nict.go.jp]

I have heard the most odd expanations like "that's the hole in the magnetosphere and downhill from there.

Anyhow, thanks alot and also for the link you use. Saved to my favorites.

Thanks for being the rock of science in this crazy world!

Speaking of the Ionosphere, do you have any thoughts on issues we may be experiencing with that at this time? I keep waking between 3 and 4 am because the night sky becomes so bright....it's hard to explain but the light difference at that hour until dawn seems unusual. The night sky seems like a cobalt blue vs. the black/blue. We have snow on the ground and the snow actually appears to be blue during this hour and sometimes up until dawn. It's enough to wake me up so was wondering if our Ionosphere was the cause of this phenomena. I live in the northeast.

I should add to this that I am very experienced in living in an area even further north where the ground is covered with snow all winter, so know what a night sky with the moon reflecting on snow is like. This appears different.

Tonight my husband and I were driving at dusk and the sky had the same hue and even my science driven only husband had to admit that the color of the sky was unusual. It was a very clear night and the temp was 13 degrees.

Good on you OTOC, I have been letting people to know since Friday night, we are in a period of increased odds for flares, 7+ yesterday, 2 today. Also to expect the CME starting Sunday. Don't forget our 'wolf" moon. Now that the second spot is visible, and clearly shows a connection to 11147 and 11149, we may be seeing trigger events between all three. Certainly good to keep eyes on this. Good job,

Sounds like an effect from noctilucent clouds.

"that's the hole in the magnetosphere" That's damn funny, I'd like to again point out that nict is a simulation, based on certain base parameters.

THose base parameters don't include holes in the magnetosphere.

Was a CME late 22nd.

Simple filament launch, not earthbound, lots of data gaps around *SDO,SOHO,STEREO. so I'll show you ahead EIT 195 for today [link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov] You can see where it happened.

Nothing to worry about. A tiny bit of it might skim earth but even then it's not strong.

Thanks, I always capture videos daily anyway. I'm not pushing the YT channel, could care less about that, I just use it for hosting the vids for another forum. I was a little torn on that, if it was pure flare or if there was heavier mass to it, which I think it does. You're expertise is certainly appreciated by many as well as by me. Do you post on another forum solar events? Best wishes and thanks again.
