i thought gout was a somewhat fashionable ailment of the upper class.

Yes, the old wives tale of too much fatty food and drink
It's genetic...my tea total'in garden growing uncle gets it bad...and so did I, until I started taking Alupurinol...
Very old and well tested med....I knew an old doctor that told he had been taking the stuff for 50+ years with no liver problems, etc
I actually only take the stuff now and again with no problems...I think it reversed/changed my uric acid production over time.....

It's nasty stuff and all of the cherries and berries and diets never made a difference with mine...tried them to no avail
 Quoting: Reader.

You can not take Allipurinol "now and then" it actually gives you an attack of gout when you first take it.
You have to take it for the rest of your life.
If you started it and stopped it you would have gout constantly.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1248319

Too true mate. I wouldn't take it, as I believe the side effects are worse than the gout!
 Quoting: Sneaky Womble

Colchicine stops it have you had it?
Also makes you sick in the guts but it works and you only have to take it when you feel it coming.
It comes from a natural plant meadow saffron but its toxic you never want to take to much and need to get it from the Dr thats how poisonous it can be.

The only reason I asked about being male is that everyone I have ever known that had that was male. If he is trying to avoid the Dr. we went to a naturopathic and changed to less meat, less alcohol, more water.

After that if it didn't work the Dr. recommended the drugs called NSAIDS. They are the first line of defense. But it got better before the drug thing was needed. Anyway it worked at our home. Never heard of the cherry juice. My husband was told basically it was diet and alcohol caused. Don't know if true but it worked.

I'm sorry OP. I have had pain for 4 months and its not Gout, but my right leg seems to be sprained, I don't know how.
But I know what being in pain feels like. Hope you feel better. I wonder if Cherry juice would help me.

Not true in the least..I only take it occasionally now with no problems...and drink a lot red wine (chianti)
 Quoting: Reader.

It is actually true, you have to take it every day, it gives you an attack of gout to start with it takes months to start reducing the Uric acid.
So if you take it then stop it will stop working, and then when you start again it will give you gout.
Im not sure why taking it sometimes works for you but you are supposed to take it everyday for the rest of your life thats a medical fact.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1248319

It may be a medical fact, but it's not a personal fact
I've had gout in both big toes, both ankles, both knees, both elbows and both thumbs..to the point of at least temporary disfigurement...gout and I are intimate to say the least...
My doctor suggested Alupurinol and I balked for years, but could not cure by myself...The big Al did...which I took religiously for a good ten years, and now rarely take it

Haven't had a gout attack in years
Sometimes, especially in the evening...I might feel a twinge..more like circulation than pain...and pop a pill

PS. I know a guy who Al didn't work for him so he started on the newer one, Uloric, I think...and it worked
Trust me, I'd rather self medicate...and may have to in the times ahead...but Allupurinol worked for me..who drinks more than he should and has his blood work twice a year with so far, no liver probs.......

I guess it's different for different people.....

Re: I have gout. Can we have a gout thread? The most agony ever...
I'm female and 60. I had gout all of 2009. My mom had it in her later life and now I have it and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I tried to take the Alpurinol(sp?) but couldn't tolerate it. I had to use crutches to walk for part of the time I had it. Took a year of a complete change of diet to finally get it under some control. Drink only water. Learn to love salads and baked potatoes and cut out anything acidic, yeast, or meat. I ate cooked cabbage and cornbread for a lot of my meals. I'm a southern cook and nothing about the diet was exciting for me, but it was the only solution for me. My doctor recently gave me a prescription for colchicine 0.6 mg. You take one tablet every 1/2 hour up to 10 tablets or diarrhea. He said I wouldn't make it up to 10 tablets, but promised it would get rid of the gout almost instantly. I haven't yet had to try it and hope that I don't have to.

Re: I have gout. Can we have a gout thread? The most agony ever...
Due to zero replies to my last highly informative posts/replies on subjects/threads such as this, I will make a last...and highly condensed reply that will give you everything you need to search/use in order to eliminate this nasty ailment, without extensive details. If you want details, find them yourself...or pay for them... I have a feeling none of my posts in the past payed off in helping anybody, and if so, no replies means I'm most likely wasting my time.

For I'm guessing about 80% reading this, even though it is very simple...there is 1 or 2 reason's why this 80% will never ever get rid of gout, and this 80% will also probably be plagued by more and more "simple" ailments that ruin the quality of their life considerably.

Eliminating gout and other bodily ailments, considered by the experts to be virtually impossible to cure, are actually quite simple... Although they may be simple...they are hard to actually "do"... "Why?", you may ask... Because even though the idea's are "simple"...the changing of deeply ingrained consumption habits and/or attitudes about conventional medicine are the real obstacles to naturally curing/healing simple ailments.

2 tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar daily...mixed with about 8oz of water. Drink plenty of purified water daily, especially if active. I wont go into how amazing and awesome this stuff is, because you can find worlds of testimonials and posts about haw amazing it is and why/how it works so good... And also, I'm sure I've went more in depth in other places. Search it.

Consume a chelated multi-mineral supplement with at least 400mg/daily-serving of magnesium in the formulation, minus the calcium. (Avoid calcium supplement, as your body will get plenty with a good diet...and it's pretty much overrated, especially compared to magnesium) Again, I'm not going into much detail...as I've probably already done that several times.

Limit soda/pop, coffee and sugary foods to just every once and a while for a treat.

Some on GLP will say that you have to quit all your treats and drinks for ever and ever or you'll get sick, your hair will fall out, you're penis/labia will fall off, and you'll be possessed by demons or cellular robots which will cause you to become a slave to the NWO...and then you'll die, leaving your kids to the possession of the PTB to be enslaved or traded on the black-market for an illuminati sacrifice to the owl-god...etc, etc, etc... Don't listen to them...a treat/drink every now and then is OK...even if it has a few "un-healthy" ingredients.

90% of your diet should be "whole foods" (unprocessed)...and 90% of your liquid consumption should be water.

Obviously I didn't go into a lot of detail in this thread for reasons already stated. Getting rid of gout is as simple as cleansing your body and overhauling your diet...with the one downside of it having to take a little...huh, gasp!!! "Discipline"...

I know, I know it sucks...first you have to accept that it's as simple as what I've just posted, and then you have to accept that it might be hard to carry out because some people just don't have "it" in them to change their habits.

As a matter of fact, I'd say 80% percent of the people reading this post that have gout, arthritis, etc...will not be able to eliminate the problem. Not because they don't have the ability...but because they are indoctrinated to conventional medicine (not that a lot of it is bad or anything...a lot is actually quite good)and/or they lack the motivation/discipline to eliminate the ingrained habits that caused the problems in the first place and replace them with new ones.

There is a book on amazon which goes by the title "Self Discipline In 10 Days"... I haven't actually read it, but according to the testimonials, it seems to be a very straightforward, brain-based methodology that avoids all the new-age Bull Shit. I'm definitely going to read it myself, even though I'm not really in need of discipline...maybe a little more motivation.

Call my brother. He has gout because he drinks a half gallon of cheap whiskey every day. His toe fell off. His finger loos as bad. Gout is caused by acid. if ya drinks to much that may be the answer. If not look for other sources of bad acid in your diet.

I would hate to see you apendegies falling off.

gout is caused by lack of magnesium in the body,

to releive pain get some magnesium chloride and mix it with water, rub it on the affected area every day,

also take some magnesium orally,

the best magnesium to drink is magnesium citrate,

start with 100mg in glass of water everyday,

you will get well soon!
Beyond one's own mind there is no dazzling light to come shining in from outside to wake one up. If one recognizes one's own intrinsic State as pure from the beginning and only temporarily obscured by impurities, and if one maintains the presence of this recognition without becoming distracted, then all the impurities dissolve. This is the essence of the Path-namkhai norbu.

Why is there a legend about the descent of Christ into hell? The Teacher addressed the lower strata of the astral world, saying: Why, by cherishing earthly thoughts, bind oneself eternally to Earth? And many revolted in spirit and rose higher.

I had a MEAN flareup over the holidays [too much boosze, rich food and running around!]. I actually thought I had sprained my wrist from the early symptomology. I discovered that Vitimin C works very WELL at easing the condition. Take a full daily dose along with a multi-vitamin and Ibuprofen for the pain. DO NOT TAKE ASPIRIN!! This will only make your condition worse.

The Vit C cleared up my condition in a little under four days time! I kid you not.. swelling, hardness around my joints, the pain...all fled like a looter from a burning building!!

By the way: Gout is a form of Inflammatory Arthritis and is caused by URIC ACID. Try keeping your Kidneys flushed with lots of Distilled water and it'll help speed up the healing process. Gout can also affect ANY joint in the body - don't think for one minute [like I did early-on] that it only flares up in your big toes!!!

AND: do NOT let it go untreated. Your joints will calcify and then you'll really be miserable.

Do you know any good treatment for it? My uncle is suffering terribly right now and whatever his doc is doing doesn't seem to help.

All I can offer is 15 fresh cherries a day, plus a level teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate in water a day.
But ease off the bicarb as soon as possible. Not too good for you.

None works for me tho. AAArgh.
 Quoting: Sneaky Womble

The bicarb won't hurt you. I have been doing it for years. Just a 1/2 teaspoon in the morning and 1/2 teaspoon before bed. Plus I drink a lot of water so sodium is not an issue. Some people add a little apple cider vinegar to the bicard/water mixture. Getting the body alkaline is very important. Eat fruit and vegetables as well.

The pain never ends, bugger the end of the world. Bring on the end of gout!
 Quoting: Sneaky Womble

Hi buddy, I have suffered from gout for many years and I always felt sick after raking colchicine. I found a solution, first apply ice for 10 minutes every half hour, next take 2 to 3 extra strength advil, and three and most important take 8 tart cherry capsules per day (you can get these at wholefoods). Keep taking the advil maximum 6 per day and the 8 tart cherry pills for 3 days. Once the pain goes away completely (about 3 days) keep taking 4 tart cherry pills a day.

Hang in there
