I didn't get the job because I am caucasian/white. Your thoughts.
I had been doing a long term temp assignment since July 2010 and did an outstanding job. When I was contacted by the agency in July they told me there was a high probability that if I was successful in the position it would go full time.

I did an outstanding job for this company and received numerous compliments from my boss, clients and other upper management about how "outstanding" I was, complimenting my performance, work ethic, punctuality, etc. I was never sick, was a key holder and completely reliable. It was a very demanding position in an office that was incredibly busy, so busy in fact they expanded and added another floor in the building so I was running back and forth (client services) at a mad pace throughout the time I was there. I set up the offices on the second floor singlehandedly as well and received accolades for it. I was covering for a person who went out early with pregnancy complications until she had her child. Upon her return, I remained as the business was booming. My boss managed to work an additional position into the budget and get it approved so there was the slated full time, permanent position, however it was approved to begin in Feb 2011.

I was told I had to apply for the job like any person would, through their website. The position was opened internally first with a week deadline and after that it was posted on the job sites on the internet. My temporary assignment ended the second week of January 2011 and I applied after the internal applicant deadline has passed as no one had applied within the company for a transfer. Last week I had a telephone interview with the HR dept, submitted everything that was necessary and requested. Lots of brass had recommended my employment including several part owners of the company.

Then... nothing... until my boss (a caucasian woman) wrote me an email yesterday telling me they had hired someone else, a person with a latino/mexican name. I was shocked. There is not one person in HR who is white and they make the decisions for employment. My boss told me she was "sorry."

I am unsure what to think at this point in time. I had performed "stellar" in my duties and was totally loyal and reliable, never sick once, so many positive things about my performance. THey even called me back to work two days a week after my assigment had ended because of someone had taken two vacation days and they just happened to be the the two busiest days of the month.

Don't want to type a book, but I am curious as to what you all think about this. Is white the new minority? I feel I have been discriminated against no doubt, I was already doing the job for so long and so well for them.

My bosses boss was black and she didn't seem to want to get to know me, just had me do things like call cabs for her, etc. She worked out of the same office as HR. There was already a "minority" in our office who was a Malcom X follower and it seemed that she had a sister type relationship with the boss of my boss.

I am not racist and have always been that way. I just cannot believe I was encouraged to apply for this position, basically lead to believe the technicality to apply was what exactly that, the position was basically created to add me to the office and HR (offsite office in another state) proceeded to hire a non white person after I had been working it for so long and so well for them.

Where I am is still the worst in the US for jobs so this isn't a time I can easily just find another position. I am rather devastated.

THanks for your input. Peace.

Judging from the wording of your headline, I would urge you not to sit around and feel sorry for yourself. Yes, life seems unfair sometimes, but not just to YOU. You may have been more qualified, they may have had a hiring quota, who can know for sure? Maybe the other person had more confidence in themselves. Learn from it.

Bottom line, it doesn't matter what the "hidden motive" was. You haven't been wronged. You are not a victim of some dubious plot. Instead of marinating on what happened at one place, move on and really put yourself out there. BE CONFIDENT, not just competent. Competition makes us stronger, better people.

Good Luck.

This wasn't one of those scenarios though, no need for spanish in this position though I do speak it fairly well. THanks though.

Man this is bullshit, you are simply assuming this was because you are white, we flat out do not have the full story here im sure of it.

Because a person with a mexican sounding name could never have more experience than or simply be a better choice than you.

Also whites are far from being the national minority, why spit something that is factually false?

Sorry to hear the job market is so bad, OP.

There is 30% of the US population out of work, and that number is only going to increase before the US government kills the diollar to change the economic system to electronic money.

We, here in mexico are starting to see an increase in thefts, while our US puppets say the recession is a thingy of the past.

Duh, sue them. If you actually have an email that says this is the reason you werent hired then you have a valid discrimination suit. While many companies do this noone is usually dumb enough to tell the other applicants about it. If you have an email esp sent from her work account you will get paid.

I guess you didn't get that the position was created to add me to the staff. I was told that and then went through their technicalities to work there full time. I worked there over 6 months with not one complaint, rather to the contrary, how outstanding I was. My boss even felt stymied but she cant say that outright.

Happened to me. I had a permanent position lined up as head of department when the current one retired. Decent position in a job I enjoyed and was good at.

He retired as the company was bought up by an “equal opportunity employer” ( read racial quota type affirmative action) and there were not enough “minority” employees to make 2 for the 1 of lil ol honky me.

Front office was trying to find a “minority” individual with a “handicap” to qualify as 2 so I could be retained.

Yeah we keep hearing YOUR SIDE based of your information.

I dont think we have the full picture to make a accurate judgement call, saying its because you were white however is knee jerk at best.

And all you have said about the other applicant is he has a mexican sounding name, not o he worked for X company prior and brings alot to the table etc..

Sounds like you lost out to nepotism. If the boss or someone else was black then it was easier for them to give the job to a friend or relative while disguising it.

I've lost out to plenty of jobs because it went to someone's friend or relative - they sometimes just post jobs at all for bureaucratic reasons but they are actually already filled.

Several things:

Employers in America favor young employees. The older you are, the more difficult it'll be to get hired. Employers are afraid of the liability statistically older people have, especially healthcare premiums.

The federal government strongly encourages employers hire 'Minorities' and gives financial incentives such as tax breaks, etc., For many employers, especially large companies, this is their bottom line: it's cheaper to hire a 'Minority' because the government subsidizes minority hiring.

Many private and semi-private [publicly financed] organizations actively lobby companies to hire minorities, threaten lawsuits, boycotts, etc. if they don't reach 'Benchmarks', i.e. quotas. I'm not aware of any such lobbying for white people.

In a nutshell: if you're especially working class white, and a male, you're screwed.
