Well, it calls it a candidate, then shoots it down, then leaves it open

"Thus, the issue of finding a satisfactorily explanation for the anomalous behavior of the Moon's eccentricity remains open. "

What they are saying is that since it is an unlikely explanation for it, that the cause of the eccentricity is still unknown.

Will NASA's WISE Space Mission Prove that 'Tyche' -Planet X- Exists?

In November 2010, the scientific journal Icarus published a paper by astrophysicists John Matese and Daniel Whitmire, who proposed the existence of a binary companion to our sun, larger than Jupiter, in the long-hypothesized "Oort cloud" -- a faraway repository of small icy bodies at the edge of our solar system.

The researchers use the name "Tyche" for the hypothetical planet. Their paper argues that evidence for the planet would have been recorded by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), a NASA mission, launched in December 2009, which scanned the entire celestial sky at four infrared wavelengths about 1.5 times.

It's still too early to know whether WISE data confirms or rules out the existence a large object in the Oort cloud. Analysis over the next couple of years will be needed to determine if WISE has actually detected such a world or not. The first 14 weeks of data, being released in April 2011, are unlikely to be sufficient. The full survey, scheduled for release in March 2012, should provide greater insight. Once the WISE data are fully processed, released and analyzed, the Tyche hypothesis that Matese and Whitmire propose will be tested.

It is likely but not a foregone conclusion that WISE will confirm whether or not Tyche exists. Since WISE surveyed the whole sky once, then covered the entire sky again in two of its infrared bands six months later, WISE would see a change in the apparent position of a large planet body in the Oort cloud over the six-month period. The two bands used in the second sky coverage were designed to identify very small, cold stars (or brown dwarfs) -- which are much like planets larger than Jupiter, as Tyche is hypothesized to be.

Getting WISE About Nemesis

Is our Sun part of a binary star system? An unseen companion star, nicknamed “Nemesis,” may be sending comets towards Earth. Throughout history, such impacts could have had a profound effect on the evolution of the biosphere by causing regular mass extinctions. If Nemesis exists, NASA’s new WISE telescope should be able to spot it.

FAQ: Will NASA Settle Debate Over Existence of Giant Planet 'Tyche'?

In 2010, the research group that came up with the Tyche idea suggested that evidence for the planet's existence may already have been gathered by a NASA spacecraft — the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). [Gallery: Photos From WISE]

WISE, which launched in December 2009 and went into hibernation earlier this month, scanned the entire sky in infrared wavelengths during its operational life. WISE may well have picked up signs of Tyche during these scans, the planet's proponents argue — scientists just haven't had enough time to pore over the data yet.

So will WISE observations vindicate the Tyche hypothesis? If so, when? Here's a NASA-provided look at the great Tyche debate and WISE's potential role in resolving it.

When could data from WISE confirm or rule out the existence of the hypothesized planet Tyche?

The first 14 weeks of data, being released in April 2011, are unlikely to be sufficient. The full survey, scheduled for release in March 2012, should provide greater insight. Once the WISE data are fully processed, released and analyzed, the Tyche hypothesis will be tested.

Is it a certainty that WISE would have observed such a planet if it exists?

It is likely but not a foregone conclusion that WISE could confirm whether or not Tyche exists. Since WISE surveyed the whole sky once, then covered the entire sky again in two of its infrared bands six months later, WISE would see a change in the apparent position of a large planet body in the Oort cloud over the six-month period.

The two bands used in the second sky coverage were designed to identify very small, cold stars (or brown dwarfs) — which are much like planets larger than Jupiter, as Tyche is hypothesized to be.

If Tyche does exist, why would it have taken so long to find another planet in our solar system?

Tyche would be too cold and faint for a visible-light telescope to identify. Sensitive infrared telescopes could pick up the glow from such an object, if they looked in the right direction.

WISE is a sensitive infrared telescope that looks in all directions.

"Recent scientific analysis no longer supports the idea that extinctions on Earth happen at regular, repeating intervals. Thus, the Nemesis hypothesis is no longer needed. However, it is still possible that the sun could have a distant, unseen companion in a more circular orbit with a period of a few million years -- one that would not cause devastating effects to terrestrial life. Like these events didn't happen in the not too distant past? Sure they did. We are just paying more attention now. We also have monitors that measure everything on the earth in real time and report it on the internet. So we can see events now that we couldn't in the past, but they still happened in the past.

Look at it this way. What are the odds that this once in a million years doomsday event would just so happen in your adult lifetime? Why didn't it happen 50 years ago, 100 years ago, 1000 years ago, or the same time in the future? No, it just happens to fall in your ripe adult age. Coincidence? No, it sounds like bullshit scare mongering to me. The odds are highly unlikely that a doomsday event will happen during your lifetime. That's just simple statistics that no one cannot refute.

get a life ;) and leave statistical odds of ele out of the game.

an extinction level event will happen exactly during somones lifetime (if you hypothesise there will be humans or animal or plant life on the sphere). if someone still lives then, it will be their lifetime.

so it can be your and my lifetime just as well as anywhere else.

Evidence for nemesis - A solar companion star
Muller, Richard A.
IN: The galaxy and the solar system (A87-34101 14-90). Tucson, AZ, University of Arizona Press, 1986, p. 387-396. Research supported by the Research Corp.

The evidence that the sun has a companion star 'Nemesis' responsible for periodic mass extinctions is reviewed. A Gaussian ideogram of the rates of family extinctions in the oceans shows periods of 26 and 30 Myr. Analysis of impact cratering on the earth shows a period of either 28.4 or 30 Myr, depending on the crater selection. Models which attempt to explain these periods with either oscillations through the galactic plane, or through the effects of a tenth planet, are seriously flawed. If the periods seen in the data are real (and not a spurious result of a statistical fluctuation), then the Nemesis hypothesis is the only suggested explanation that has survived close scrutiny. The Nemesis model predicts that the impacts took place during brief storms of several million years duration, perhaps accounting for the extended nature of the mass extinctions. A search for Nemesis is underway at Berkeley.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1277855

'A search for Nemesis in underway at Berkley'. From 1986. Has anything actually happened to support the theory of a companion star in the intervening 25 years?

Incidentally, you people never seem sure as to what exactly Nemesis is supposed to be. Is it a planet? A star? A brown dwarf? An asteroid? Make your mind up.

But, at the same time; it doesn't mean I'm going to stop just because everyone says it doesn't exist. If I did that, I would never learn anything on the way. That's much how science works.

Yes that view is correct only if you randomly began searching for a magic cheery pie for no reason.

That is not the case in the search for a 'body' which causes certain fluctuations in the solar system which are as yet unexplained.

Look up the meaning of hypothesis and why one is developed.

See the difference?

Re: Proof They Know About Planet X
Gazmik, aren't you the guy from Fox news in the baseball cap, you know, the "man on the street" who just happened to know on 911 exactly that the towers fell from structural failure due to the fire? Am I right?

You fall for any wild-assed speculation that is tossed your way as long as it defies the logical explanation, don't you? It doesn't matter how infeasible it is, does it?

There is no evidence of the mythical "Nibiru" that is supposedly going to pass through the inner solar system in 2012.
 Quoting: Gazmik

How do you know it is a myth? What evidence is there for that proposition?
