Usually cities use groundwater that has been naturally filtered for years. Then it goes to a processing plant with reverse osmosis and fancy pants filters.

200 tons of water are being dumped on the reactors every day. We all know its becoming radioactive and flowing into the air and sea. You CANNOT encase almost 400 tons of molten radio-active material in reactors in concrete in its present state. The massive heat build up inside the concrete containment shell would produce a cataclismic explosion (see chernobyl youtube-corium leaching into water theory-they said Europe would have become a wasteland from the neuclear explosion). Bombing the reactors is even worse, if thats possible (radio-active fallout driven miles high into the atmosphere to be driven by jet-stream winds). I hate to say it, but I have been giving my wife and kids big hugs lately - (I have not told them of my fears), because I truely believe, that as this plays out over the next months (yes, this catastrophe will take months, if not years to play out), this is going to change their hopes and dreams forever. I dont care about myself. I am old and done. Tragicaly, we as a world may have failed to protect our most precious asset, our children.

During the cold war, all through the 1970's and 1980's they tested a nuke in the Nevada desert every other week. We aren't we all dead from that.

If one molecule of plutonium enters your body, you will die. Breathing, eating, drinking, everything...it's the new lottery...

Sick and old people in nursing homes/hospitals will be the first to go...

Burba is a resin they plan to seal the gamma/beta emitters from water before they backfill with sand/equal glass and concrete.

Plutonium is a local problem for the japanese not the US or anywhere else.

The less dangerous less long lasting iodine and caesium might be until they seal this thing.

From San Francisco Area - Distilled water and NO more milk products from now on. I hope to God the produce is OK.

At this level, you would need to drink 632 liters of this rain water to obtain the same radiation effects you obtain on a round-trip flight between San Francisco and Washington D.C. Therefore, the increase in radiation levels in the rain water due to the events in Japan remain extremely small.

It's rainwater, not tap water.

Brita filters do next to nothing.PUR filters do take out a decent amount.A distiller will take out cesium and other heavy elements,but since it is a pressure system the iodine moves over with the water.

The best is a reverse osmosis filter.Lacking that I would use the PUR filter.

It will show up in children first for sure(infants especially),by the time any symptoms actually show it is already to late.
