Does daylight saving time really save energy? Is it bad for your health? Here are answers from experts. When Will Daylight Savings Begin in 2013? For most Americans, daylight saving time 2013 will begin 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 10, when most states will spring forward an hour. Strange 'Methuselah' Star Looks Older Than the Universe The oldest known star appears to be older than the universe itself, but a new study is helping to clear up this seeming paradox. Previous research had estimated that the Milky Way galaxy's so-called "Methuselah star" is up to 16 billion years old. That's a problem, since most researchers agree that the Big Bang that created the universe occurred about 13.8 billion years ago. Now a team of astronomers has derived a new, less nonsensical age for the Methuselah star, incorporating information about its distance, brightness, composition and structure. Everyone involved is now eyeing a second cavern that may be too close to the Texas Brine salt dome well. But Texas Brine reps say no one should jump to any conclusion until seismic testing is complete. It may have stated back in May 2012, but in early August 2012,it was reported that... A nearly 400-foot deep sinkhole in Louisiana has swallowed all of the trees in its area and enacted a mandatory evacuation order for about 150 residences for fear of potential radiation and explosions. The sinkhole is 1,500 feet from a butane gas cavern. If the current sinkhole grows, it could rupture the adjoining salt domes. Not a good situation. It would be a domino effect that could devastate and impact a huge area of that state (Including New Orleans). The gaping hole has a diameter of 372 feet. It is in Assumption Parish, La., about 50 miles south of Baton Rouge. 400 feet when it started now 9 acres predicting it will go to 40+ acres or more! Bubbles now showing in two more Parishes where they are trying to make more underground storage units by AGL where 1980 project swallowed whole lake with whirlpool Drilling disaster On November 20, 1980, when the disaster took place, the Diamond Crystal Salt Company operated the Jefferson Island salt mine under the lake, while a Texaco oil rig drilled down from the surface of the lake searching for petroleum. Due to a miscalculation, the 14-inch (36 cm) drill bit entered the mine, starting a chain of events which turned what was at the time an almost 10-foot (3.0 m) deep freshwater lake into a salt water lake with a deep hole. It is difficult to determine exactly what occurred, as all of the evidence was destroyed or washed away in the ensuing maelstrom. One explanation is that a miscalculation by Texaco regarding their location resulted in the drill puncturing the roof of the third level of the mine. This created an opening in the bottom of the lake. The lake then drained into the hole, expanding the size of that hole as the soil and salt were washed into the mine by the rushing water, filling the enormous caverns left by the removal of salt over the years. The resultant whirlpool sucked in the drilling platform, eleven barges, many trees and 65 acres (260,000 m2) of the surrounding terrain. So much water drained into those caverns that the flow of the Delcambre Canal that usually empties the lake into Vermilion Bay was reversed, making the canal a temporary inlet. This backflow created, for a few days, the tallest waterfall ever in the state of Louisiana, at 164 feet (50 m), as the lake refilled with salt water from the Delcambre Canal and Vermilion Bay. The water downflowing into the mine caverns displaced air which erupted as compressed air and then later as 400-foot (120 m) geysers up through the mineshafts. There were no injuries and no human lives lost. All 55 employees in the mine at the time of the accident were able to escape thanks to well-planned and rehearsed evacuation drills, while the staff of the drilling rig fled the platform before it was sucked down into the new depths of the lake, and Leonce Viator, Jr. (a local fisherman) was able to drive his small boat to the shore and get out.[4] Three dogs were reported killed, however. Days after the disaster, once the water pressure equalized, nine of the eleven sunken barges popped out of the whirlpool and refloated on the lake's surface. Salinity The lake had salt water after the event, not as a result of water entering the salt mine, but from the salt water from the Delcambre Canal and Vermilion Bay, which are naturally salt or brackish water. The event permanently affected the ecosystem of the lake by changing the lake from freshwater to saltwater and increasing the depth of part of the lake. Aftermath The drilling company, Texaco and Wilson Brothers, paid $32 million to Diamond Crystal and $12.8 million to nearby Live Oak Gardens in out-of-court settlements to compensate for the damage caused. The mine was finally closed in December 1986. Since 1994 AGL Resources has been using Lake Peigneur’s underlying salt dome as a Storage and Hub facility for pressurized natural gas. There is currently concern from local residents to the safety of storing the gas under the lake and nearby drilling operations. [link to en.wikipedia.org] These are all really good videos. Get out.” And they need to get out. That land, those homes, it’s useless now. They’ve got a situation, they’re trying to tell the community clearly, “This is a mandatory evacuation.” That means danger. There’s serious gas pressure there. There is absolutely risk and potential for explosion." PLEASE READ: "Second salt cavern near sinkhole raises concerns" March 08, 2013 BAYOU CORNE, LA (WAFB) The latest news looks worse for the sinkhole in Assumption Parish. These are all really good videos. EC my prayers are with you and yours. Thank AK for your diligence. AKObserver User ID: 35760837 United States 03/10/2013 07:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You're very welcome I just added some more and sent another email My heart goes out to all our friends in the Gulf States as I fear LA is not the only state envolved it will come out eventually as the Aquifer-System is 230,000 sq miles and encompases all the states listed below and 60,000 sq miles offshore! BP has poisioned it all. Talk about some real doom! As I said from the beginning Greed is going to kill us all! [link to setgcd.org] [link to setgcd.org] The Gulf Coast Regional Aquifer-System Analysis is a study of regional aquifers in sediments of mostly Cenozoic age in an area of about 230,000 sq mi in the Central Plain of Alabama, Arkansas , Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas, and an additional 60,000 sq mi offshore. Three aquifer systems have been identified: the Mississippi embayment aquifer system, the Texas coastal uplands aquifer system, and the coastal lowlands aquifer system. These aquifer systems thicken from < 100 ft near their updip limit to thousands of ft gulfward toward their downdip limits. The Mississippi embayment aquifer system exceeds 5,000 ft in thickness in central Louisiana and in southwestern Mississippi. The thickest area in southwestern Mississippi underlies most of the six Mississippi counties, centered around Jefferson County. The greatest thickness of the coastal lowlands aquifer system in Mississippi occurs in southern Hancock County where the system is composed of several individual aquifers and confining units. There are seven aquifers and three confining units in the Mississippi embayment aquifer system, five aquifers and two confining units in the Texas coastal uplands aquifer system, and five aquifers and two confining units in the coastal lowlands aquifer system. Most of the thicker parts of each aquifer system contain moderately saline to very saline water. Water in the Mississippi embayment aquifer system is moderately saline to very saline in most of a seven county area in southwestern Mississippi. About 9,600 million gal/day (gpd) of ground water was pumped from the aquifers in the study area during 1980. About 15% of that pumpage (or about 1,400 million gpd was in Mississippi, mostly from the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer of the Mississippi embayment aquifer system. About 10% of the Mississippi pumpage, or 140 million gpd, was from the coastal lowlands aquifer system. Preliminary results from simulation of groundwater flow indicates that parts of Mississippi are major regional recharge areas for both the Mississippi embayment aquifer system and the coastal lowlands aquifer system.
