I as well am an immigrant to America, and though I do find myself often being the smartest person in the room...even when the others in that room are the Mayor, Sheriff and Chief of Police and other people who are supposed to be our leaders...I also understand that even the Mayor and the cops didn't choose the way of life they grew up in...they didn't choose the bad and worsening education system...they didn't choose the prevalence of ear-splitting ignorance inducing hard rock and rap influencing our society until the youth can barely speak English as a first language.

Yes, many Americans are "dumb as a bag of hammers" but none of them made the initial choice of stupidity through "taking the easy way" through school (just memorise enough to pass the tests and fuck the rest the only thing that matters is "good grades.") which lead them down the road to self-sustaining ignorance in later life. That choice was made for them at an age when they didn't know better and couldn't have.

"It's better to be an "A" student." "You better not have an "F" on that report card little Johnny!" "The only thing that matters is that you pass your mid-terms and finals...nothing else really counts." "You're never gonna NEED algebra when you get out of school...just learn enough to pass the tests and get through it...you'll always have the Summer to party."

These are the mindsets which have contributed to the mass-stupidity the US is suffering from. When I run into someone who I can tell is just painfully, dangerously stupid...I take the mindset of one who is interacting with someone else with a degenerative brain disorder. I don't fault the other for having a degenerative brain disorder, I just know what I dealing with is not someone who I will be able to discuss the finer points of...well...anything with. Simple words, simple phrases and easy task assignments. Constant encouragement and overblown recognition of minor achievements to boost self-esteem. It's the only thing that works.

Op is a new form of racist I call it Nationist, stereotyping a whole group of people under the actions of a few. Are alot of Americans ignorant? Yes! had op said this I would have to agree but he did not, He said Americans are dumb, I don't believe that to be true, but I do believe our social and educational establishments have failed us and need to be rebuilt.

The statement that someone is dumb simply because of the flag they hail from is an ignorant statement in itself. Americans are the most ethnically diverse people on the planet and the color of the flag has no basis on their intelligence. So what could be the reason?

Why do children get the summer off from school it makes no sense and this lapse in the education system is killing America's competitiveness in the international market for jobs and services. The problems Americans have with standardized tests can be remedied with a once-and-for-all overhaul of the educational establishment here.

But you know alot of my friends are the git'r done type and I cannot blame them for being that way it is the culture of this locale. I don't fit in well with them but they are still my friends and they are good people. belgium is a small place and much richer in many ways than America.

You must remember we as a country are but young and we do not have a real set of values we pass on, thus there is alot of religious fervor, which kills education. For example the state of Kansas is required by law to teach creationism.

America elected Richard Nixon in a landslide and almost elected George Dubya twice. Most of my dumbass countrymen couldn't pass a citizenship test or tell you who what continent Iraq belongs to.

Sure, dumb as rocks but understand "dumb" is purely subjective. I have a high school education and know plenty of college educated idiots. I'm self made and sucessfull and see through the brainwashing on the news and am completely aware. People like me would not walk up to a camera and a microphone on the street and answer stupid questions. If we did you would never see it because thats not the point "they're" trying to make.

People like me, with little education, owning our own homes and maintaining them, fixing our own cars, building our own computers, growing gardens in our back yards, shooting and maintaining our own firearms. We do all this with a corrupt government trying to F**k us up the ass everyday.
