I saw a woman who must have been in her 80s stalking shelves while holding her walker at wal mart the other day. A lot of them are going back to work around here. And btw, they did earn their social security and medicare.

how about a better idea!!!

seeing how everyone is paying into those government programs for their old age, golden years.

I used to work at a Bally Total Fitness and we had a cleaning crew of mentally handicap people come in once a week to wipe mirrors and windows. Sure, they didn't do the best job but at least they were doing something and it gave them a reason to feel useful to. If the mentally handicap can find a job I'm pretty sure just about anyone can.

why not send an 8 year old kid to work, im sure they are capable too.

Yeah, boo hoo. I won't get mine back either. I had to quit work for health reasons. I'd love to be able to go back to work and not worry about not having money for food...my 71 year old husband and I both still work from home. What the f*n hell is "retirement"?

YOUR AN ASS, their taxes paid for it... your taxes are paying for your time to sit on your ass. Unless at 72 you think you'll still be working!! They paid in all their lives just like you are, and you would deny them the rights you think you will deserve when you're old.

Why don't YOU get out there and do some research, and see why Social Security was formed to begin with. My Dad worked his whole life, until he was 68. Military man, taught college, and now deserves the right to collect his pension, retirement and his Social Security. You need to grow a pair and become a man.

Because they have paid into the system . Most were working by mid teens and paying taxes. As in full time work, not part time.

How would you feel when you worked all your life & Every check you get, money was being pulled out & into SS. Then when you retire someone tells you, No. Can't have it.

The people here that are complaining about old people are probably the lazy welfare bitches and bastards that spend their whole lives leaching off the system. Don't you just love the "see? government can't be trusted with the money!" crowd. We know its the exact same crowd of people, saying the exact same things in DC a few decades ago who dipped into the money and redirected it toward their crony corrupt projects in the first place, who are hoping the people will turn their back on their crimes now that the money is gone, because they, the criminals were in the "government" when they committed their crimes so it proves a problem with "government", not with what they did.

Of course the seniors paid into it, and thus are entitled to it. Listen to them try to redefine the word "entitlement" from that core meaning to some kind of hand out, so they can redirect focus from the crime.

There is so much corruption right now that it places a tremendous weight on the concept of the legitimacy of our government. But I have faith in the rationality of the people to demand what is right.

YOU are paying into your future each time SSI and FICA and a few other things are taken out of your pay check.

The 'old' people who are retired did the same thing, going all the way back to when they got their first job.

The way the system works is that the young folk pay into the system and that money is used immediately for the folk who are 'retired'.

this system works rather well if we have constant growth or even a steady birth to death ratio. but we didn't, we had the baby boom and then a baby implosion (reduction) and that reduction continued not through one, but two and now into three generations (I don't know, kids just stopped liking sex and making babies I guess).

Now congress could have fixed this way back in the 1980's by taking a chunk of social security and depositing in a low interest bearing savings account. But No, congress decided to continue spending money to fight the Commie Threat and various other things (jets and caviar are expensive).

This social security 'problem' is just bad husbandry by the congress and government. Had Reagan's congress actually done the right things social security and Medicare would be self sustaining.

Further, if anyone had been clearly thinking, the way banking is done and how it makes money from money it has sitting in low interest rate bearing accounts (via debt) this whole economic crises and Budget Cliff this congress faces wouldn't exist.

But the elite have to keep sticking it to the poor and middle class, so you gets what you gets.
