Its funny you point to a place on earth, because the origins of hell (at least one of the contributors) is Gehenna. The other words used for hell in the bible are Tartarus, which is from greek mythology, Hades, again from the greeks, and Sheol, which is only used in the OT as the place of afterlife.

Gehenna is a real place. It has existed since biblical times, and was used as a place to burn the dead. (hell, fire, burning....sound familiar?)
