I live in central texas. When i was outside leveling out a mount of dirt, i lightly dragged a rake across the ground and it pulled up 90% of the grass, dead roots and all. Normally wehave lots of u derbrush clogging up the outskirts of our yard where the forest meets but virtually all of it is dead and dried up. Nothing but trees survive beyond our sprinkler system.

We have fewer birds, most our trees are dying or at best have very withered and dry leaves. It is very bad here.

Feel for you, this is just God-awful.bump

Thanks for the bump, Spider.

Mojo, we're doing better down here, but what's left of the lawn is quickly dying.

We lost one white oak in our front yard, and I've been watering the red oak that's fighting to stay healthy.

Our sweet gum trees are much more resistant, as they've got a deep taproot, but even they are shedding leaves.

"The drought that has turned Texas and parts of the Plains into a parched moonscape of cracked earth could persist into next year, prolonging the misery of farmers and ranchers who have endured a dry spell that is now expected to be the state's worst since the 1950s.

The U.S. Climate Prediction Center said Thursday that the La Nina weather phenomenon blamed for the crippling lack of rain might be back soon, just two months after the last La Nina ended. If that happens, the drought would almost certainly extend into 2012.

The extreme dry conditions have been made worse by week after week of triple-digit temperatures, which have caused reservoirs to evaporate, crops to wither and animals and fish to die off by the thousands.

Next comes the dust bowl effect. No plants to hold soil, soil blows away . Doesn't take long.gaah

You're not kidding.

The grass that I normally have to fight on our driveway (unpaved) is almost all dead and now the dirt left under it is fast becoming a fine powder.

We won't know for sure just how bad we'd get hit by La Nina till it happens. Past 2 La Nina's were largely stricted to regional part of Texas (2005-2006 for Dallas-Ft Worth area) and 2008-2009 for south-central Texas). This La Nina was significantly stronger covering entire Texas. It is quite possible that parts of Texas will see at least normal amount of rainfall. We will have to wait and see...

I for one definitely have my fingers crossed for an earlier and longer than normal rainy season, but also worry what will happen after the first major rain we get.

Well, we're officially in uncharted territory in regards to days over 100°F:

Weather Channel is currently predicting another week of 100°F days.

Hell, Liberty County is looking to get a 106°F reading on Saturday!

"There's growing concern among some scientists that Texas' drought could linger through another dry winter and return next summer to more deeply ravage an already water-stressed state.

"I've started telling anyone who's interested that it's likely much of Texas will still be in severe drought this time next summer, with water supply implications even worse than those we are now experiencing," said John Nielsen-Gammon, the state climatologist and a Texas A&M University professor.

It's official, La Nina is back:

More than likely Texas will see drought conditions extend on through what should be our rainy season and persist into next year.

"The implications of this are clear: the state’s worst one-year drought on record now seems likely to last more than a year."

"Houston’s never been this warm, this late in the year.

The mercury has reached 102 degrees this afternoon at Bush Intercontinental Airport, reports the National Weather Service, smashing the old record of 98 degrees set in 1912.
