Those were the smart ones who evacuated early. Many Houstonians were stuck on the freeway... and many of those left the freeway parking lot only to get lost in the backwoods of southeast Texas. . |

Out here in Liberty County (kinda the backwoods of SE Texas), they had the traffic so f***ed during Rita that it was impossible to evacuate, so we just hunkered down and rode it out. Watching the horror that was I-45, we were probably better off. For those that did stay, it was funny how no one thought about how with no power you can't pump gas. I was smart and had a bunch on hand, and also filled all the cars ahead of time. I'm actually praying we get a hurricane here soon, as it's the only chance for breaking this pattern. My brother lives near NASA and was in an evacuation area, so he went to my sister's house in northern Houston. My sister lost power and had some damage. The irony is... my brother called one of his neighbors who had rode it out.. his NASA neighborhood never lost power and there was no damage. . |

In June, the city implemented what it calls Stage 1 water conservation. Those include voluntary restrictions on water usage, including a request that residents limit the watering of lawns to twice a week and to do that watering at night or in the early-morning hours. Under Stage 2, those restrictions would become mandatory. Other restrictions, such as a prohibition on washing cars, would be added, Parker said. Residents also would be required to repair water leaks on their properties within 72 hours. The mandatory restrictions would be enforced through fines, though Parker did not elaborate. "We are coming closer and closer to drawing down water from Lake Conroe to stabilize the water levels in Lake Houston," the mayor said. "And we are coming closer and closer to a stage 2 water conservation, which is mandatory."" [link to www.chron.com] Step one, as the heat and drought continues, watch it snowball.
