I am definitely getting it. Looks interesting at least and may come in handy. Hope I don't need it though.

Great book, however I suggest the mini version - same content but much better for the bugout bag [link to www.amazon.com]

Agreed. They had this as part of one of their "Buy 4, get the cheapest free" promotions a while back. I got several; one for the general backpack I have with me at all times (Get Home bag), one for the larger backpack (Bug Out bag), one for my mother's BOB and a spare.

Just be aware that not everything in that book should be taken as gospel truth.

For instance, you will sweat out more water equity than you could possibly hope to gain from digging and constructing a solar water still. Even in an emergency situation, it may not be worth the effort.

Not trying to dissuade anybody from reading it and practicing what they learn. Just be aware that just because you read it in that book, it doesn't necessarily mean that it covers all of your best options. You ultimately are the one responsible for those choices hf
"What you have just said, is the most insanely idiotic thing I have ever heard. At no point, in your rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul."

Re: Arrived: SAS Survival Handbook.
Here's a link to a good article about survival manuals and misinformation:
[link to ridgerunnersurvival.tripod.com]

"I am not saying that military manuals have no value. Many contain detailed and accurate information in many subjects such as navigation and signaling. The point is that much of the information is rehashed, outdated, unspecific, and untried by those who still include it for print. In a survival situation one piece of bad advice can wipe out all the good. Like everything else, use good judgment and try the techniques before you need them for real. And once again, my hat is off to the survival instructors of our armed forces. I believe it is because of your expertise, and not the information in the manuals, that death from wilderness related emergencies is rare among our service people."

So after some research here on GLP and other sites, I decided to purchase SAS Survival Handbook. By John "Lofty" Wiseman.

[link to www.amazon.com]

This book rules.

Has everything you need to learn about how to survive DOOM.

Poisonous plants, edible plants, trap making, fire making, for all climates.

Great book, and a good read even if doom doesnt happen.

I've had this book for several years now ...it is the best and most comprehensive book out there. I especially liked (and have tried) many of the traps ..... they work!!!

I saw this book posted on GLP and other places when people asked about survival books.

In the event of pending doom there are only two things you need to do:

1. Insert your head between your legs
2. Kiss your arse goodbye

Re: Arrived: SAS Survival Handbook.
if you don't want to buy it, or don't have the funds.. there are tons of sites that give this material away for FREE! along with many other military manuals. Also if you want an awesome practical DVD series on survival in many situations I recommend checking out Hood's woods DVD series. They cover every thing from surviving in the wild to surviving at home or on the road. You can purchase them online or watch most on you tube. Naked into the wilderness is also an amazing set. They cover how to build semi permanent shelters to field dressing and cutting up your own game to making clothing.

I guess you can find pretty much anything on the web though, so there aren't many excuses not to be prepared.

I couldn't wait for shipping, just went to Barnes&Noble and got the last copy.

You guys are spot on! I compared it with all the other survivor books on the shelf and non were as thorough or as nicely illustrated as this one.

Re: Arrived: SAS Survival Handbook.
The SAS is a good read, and while it will prepare you with certain topics, ....it's my hope that most conclude the difficulties of going it alone, which most here have not experienced.

And hopefully, once you read and master it in your head, the realization will occur, that in the event, it's probable one will not be able to accomplish 30% of what's in that book ALONE.

Hence, my suggestion is to not only read that, and all other declassified military handbooks in coordination with setting up teams with people you trust or joining a militia, etc.

Face it folks, you're not going to do anything on your own, and what if you have children? I know many men who think they're going to stand out on their lawns with a rifle. That ain't going to work.

God Bless.

It really is a great book.

I highly suggest that everyone read it and keep a copy at home.

Practice the things in it too, if you have any opportunity.

It's not the end all of guides, but it's about as complete as any I've seen personally.
 Quoting: Alex A Madison

Agreed! I keep a copy in my car.
