As scary as it would be to float around like that, I imagine they were far safer staying in their vehicles than trying to run for something and perhaps not making it to higher ground before the wave took them under.
 Quoting: Tawandaaaa

Yes, I think so. And do not put down the windows in front, but put down the windows in back (for escape path, if needed) - as the cars float, with the nose down a bit (due to engine weight of course).
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 519048

I agree.
If you don't put one of the windows down it may create some sort of suction, particuarly if you are under water.

Where did all the people go... I did not see anyone in their cars?

This is a film recovered from the inside of a car showing the Earthquake and subsequent Tsunami in progress. I don't know what happened to the occupants of the car!

You know what I don't understand about this video.

I thought the Japanese were tsunami experts.

Why were they not driving for higher ground after shaking so strong that a man had to crouch to remain standing?
 Quoting: Tyranny of Evil Men

There are Tsunami walls about 6ft all over japans coast line.
Many people thought that they would be kept safe by the walls.

In some places the first surge didnt breach these barriers, only second third etc surges pulled the walls down.

Trust me, if this had happened in any other country the casualties would be much higher.

Re: This is amazing - Japanese Tsunami from recovered video inside car
I honestly think the driver hopped out at the same time the guy in the grey Honda left his car. If you notice, the guy in the Honda jumps out but then you can hear the car with the camera's door close. You can even see a slight bump or jolt in the recording from the door slamming shut.

Also the camera was recording sound and there's no one screaming, crying, etc heard.

The real question is why the hell did the guy in the grey Honda run back to his car to make sure the door closed??? He lost a good 3 - 5 seconds of valuable hauling ass time.

Nice find. Amazes me there weren't more people getting out of their cars. I'd rather swim for something more stable. Like, after I was done pooping my pants.

But did you look at all the debris in the water? No where looked safe that is why they probably stayed in the car. Amazing they were videotaping when this happened.

Incredible quality on that video. Good audio as well. Very impressive. I had not seen this particular one before so I'm glad it was posted. Thanks NOP!

That guy at the beginning trying to stay on his feet during the quake. That was interesting too. Kind of creepy the way he stood there and stared at the camera.
He was out in the open. Imagine being in any building.

Same here. Imagine being in this situation even if prepared more than most. You'd have no time once yous aw the water to even get your supplies say if they were in your trunk and you didn't have an SUV. By the time you got out and grabbed it, you'd be done. Would have to grab it from inside the car, which may still be too late.

Looks like one of those "bend over and kiss it goodbye" scenarios that if you survive it, it's no more than luck of the draw.
