Re: Bright star next to moon right now?
Its Antares?

(α Scorpii, α Sco, Alpha Scorpii) is a red supergiant star in the Milky Way galaxy and the sixteenth brightest star in the nighttime sky (sometimes listed as 15th brightest, if the two brighter components of the Capella quadruple star system are counted as one star). Along with Aldebaran, Spica, and Regulus it is one of the four brightest stars near the ecliptic. Antares is a slow variable star with an average magnitude of +1.09.[

Alternative name of this star, meaning "the Heart of Scorpion"

The orbit is poorly known, with an estimated period of 878 years. Hence, 8 points of the pentagram.

Templar lore associated with the fixed stars Aldebaran and Antares. "Watchers of the Western and Eastern Portals?"

How yeah, Explains this?

Here is a familiar figure – to stargazers – and to Texans like me. Just yesterday, my little neighbor – age 5 – told me she saw a scorpion. To those of us who watch the skies, the chance to see a celestial Scorpion is present mostly in the summer months. Here it is – Scorpius the Scorpion – only visible at nightfall and very early evening now that summer is fading away.

The Scorpion is one of the few constellations that looks like the creature for which it was named. It’s that curved “tail” of stars looping down toward the southern horizon that does the trick. The star Antares is sometimes called the Heart of the Scorpion. It is a fiery red star, one of the brightest stars in the sky, with a reputation for twinkling fiercely. The fierce twinkling no doubt stems from the fact that, to us in the northern hemisphere, Antares arcs across the southern sky and is often seen low in the sky. And when we look low in the sky, we’re looking through a thicker-than-usual mass of Earth’s atmosphere. The atmosphere, of course, is what causes stars to twinkle.

Moon and star iconJupiter rises just to the right of the Moon in mid-evening and sticks with it as they climb high across the sky later on. It looks like a brilliant star. Through binoculars, Jupiter’s four largest moons look like tiny stars quite near the planet.

the atmosphere is not the reason that celestial objects twinkle but that's another story

arcturus was known as the mother of antares in native australian tribes

Nope. Arcturus sets in the West around the same time Jupiter is rising in the East. The object next to the Moon was Jupiter. I've been watching it with my telescope.

It's not Jupiter. Planets don't appear in the sky in comparable positions to our moon for 4 nights in row. Our moon orbits us, planets orbit the Sun. DUH. lol

I'm in Central New York, I just took the dog out and saw a bright star next to the moon. The problem is I didn't notice any other stars except one really faint one off in the other direction.

Is there supposed to be a bright star near the moon? It's really bright. It even made a halo type glare on the passing thin clouds.

Duuuuh! The moon takes 29.5 days to orbit the earth, so it moves across the sky fairly slowly.

If you'd actually been looking, instead of getting your information from GLP, you'd have seen that the moon has in fact slowly been passing Jupiter over the last few days. They haven't been in exactly the same positions relative to each other.

So, double duuuuh! to you... tounge

there are other stars to bright..so when i use the telescope u can see like they have 3 different colors..but this one it's just white..nothing else..so i was wondering maybe somebody could tell me about it..so i guess i'm gonna keep looking..

I'm not sure what you mean by "halos" but it sound like your telescope needs adjusting. If it's a reflector get the collimation checked.

Since people never give even half-understandable information about time and direction, it's hard to say which objects they're looking at, but currently Venus is in the south west after sunset, with Jupiter quite high, and more to the south. Mars rises in the east about 9 pm, and Saturn rises after midnight.

7.37pm in Bookham, south-East England. I'm no expert but to me it looks like Venus. It's the coolest thing I have ever seen . .. in the sky.
Does anyone know of any sites that I can look at as this is the first time I have seen this sort of thing and I'm kind of hooked
