Interesting. Thanks for the link and your input :) You sound like you aren't bothered at all by Uncle Sam wanting to look at your buying habits and a closer look into how you live. Are you public sector or do you work for a government agency? I'm not trying to come off nosey, just trying to understand your willingness to divulge so much personal information and devote so much time to an agency. Most people here on GLP are against government information digging/procuring/surveying/etc. It's kind of viewed as an invasion of privacy.

To me it seems if they want to survey CPI they can just look to the stores for the answers. What are people buying, what are they charging, etc. The economy is in the pooper, I don't think they need my financial information and spending habits to help determine that. I actually still contribute to the economy and spend more freely than most these days. I would probably be the black sheep in the survey, LOL.

Another group of Economic Assistants from BLS collect the CPI data. They physically go into the stores and record the prices of goods and services every month. The Consumer Expenditure Survey collect the spending habits of consumers based on demographics, income etc.

You would think though that they could get this some other way. I know the government has access to our spending. I just don't want to know about it!

So they want to poke their noses into the lives of the "small people" again, eh?

It's about time we turn the tables. Perhaps anybody who receives one of these pain in the ass letter should send it back, along with a note....something to the effect of this:

"Dear Census Bureau,

It is with a minimal level of regret and sorrow that I must inform you that I can not participate in this program as requested. As a regular person with a modest income, I think very carefully and carefully plan in order to stretch every dollar I spend as far as I can.

However, I think it would be a *great* idea for the federal government to start keeping a daily log of spending that would account for each and every spent. No program or funds shall be exempt. It will help the people understand how our money is spent, and will enable us to submit ideas and allow you to finally be accountable to the people for the wasteful spending of our money.
The records of such a program will be published each day for the previous days spending.

Failure to do so will result in a daily fine of $2,500 per worker-bee household in this country.

We thank you in advance for your time and cooperation with this new program.
