Taz (OP) User ID: 3122643 United States 10/31/2011 11:06 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Any idea on how I can mix canned with dry for my seven feral cats? I try to mix in canned sometimes and one cat usually eats all of it before the other gets a chance. They all eat at different time periods and never together and they have mixed up schedule. Is it safe to pour a shitload of canned out so the other will be too full to finish and then the next one comes? Howblong can canned food be outside until its not editable for the cats. I'm thinking bcuz these are feral cats they might way bugs and things when they aren't eating dry food that I'm leaving out for them. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1247254 7 separate dishes, or even paper plates with the can food. a 1/4 can or so ea I was told (if twice a day) and then leave like a "community bowl" of dry, I would. and also tons of water, and u can put like a bowl in the tub and let it drip. They love that, and the dripping water keep it full with that many cats. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 4357384 United States 10/31/2011 11:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Shit I had my cat on HSD for yearrrssss... He used to throw up all the time, sometimes projectile vomiting, I felt so bad for him. Finally the light bulb went off, and I realized it was more then likely the Hills making him throw up so much. So I decided to change his food, and at the pet store, they told me HSD is one step above Friskies. It's crap food, and actually one day when I was buying him his food, random people in line were telling me to get my cat off of it, that it's terrible food, terrible product. So, I switched him to Organix. Been on it for about 1-2 yrs, with no issues. Hardly throws up anymore and when he does, it's mostly hairballs like a normal cat now. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4357384 I recommend this food, cause it's all natural. First ingredient is Chicken. ill check that one out too. And theres one like " tastes of the wild " same concept. its based on Venison and Salmon and all 100% natural stuff. No fillers. Something else I have researched is u cant just switch a cat. you mix it and gradually over a week or two make the switch or that TOO can screw up their systems. Yeah, I had to do that. I actually went through several different high end brands before he settled on Organix. I would email pet food companies to get free samples in the mail, and I returned more bags of cat food to every pet store in my area, than I can count. It was tough, but glad he finally settled on this one. Im comfortable with his choice. Oh, and our family learned years ago, when we lost our dog to a tumor, and sickness, that Purina is also crap food. Our Vet at the time (over 10 yrs ago now), told us we were basically killing our dog buy feeding him Purina. Thousands, and thousands of dollars later, and no dog..... And I couldnt agree more OP. Paying 3-5 dollars more for a quality pet food, maybe even more $$, is well worth it. 10-20 for quality pet food, or 2000-5000 dollars in vet bills.... thats a no brainer. I actually tried Taste of the Wild (? forget exact name), and he didnt care for it, he doesnt like seafood, or gamey meats, he's a chicken eater. He's also mainly a dry kibble eater, he likes the crunch, so he needs the big kibble, so he can crunch it into small peices all over the floor for me to clean up. Thanks kittehhhh ! And I like that you posted this here tonight. Something a lot of people dont know, or need to hear first hand, before they realize, the food you feed your pets makes a huge difference in their well being. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 4232566 United States 10/31/2011 11:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | feed your cats raw chicken livers and brown rice daily. you can give them RAW chicken thighs (any parts are fine really including the organ meat if your call will eat them). I also added a nutritional supplement that I use to the rice (nutritional flakes). My cat would not eat the rice without these flakes. This diet will also help with the digestive issues one poster commented about. This is a relatively inexpensive diet (B.A.R.F bones and raw food for cats). The rice is a must or your cat will get liquid shits. You can also make a patte with the rice, flakes, chicken livers and diatomaceous earth (d.e will keep your cat free of worms). Give your cats spring water. I noticed that my kittens and their mother would not drink the water I was giving them in 100+ degree weather. I thought they must be getting their water somewhere else until I was outside smoking one day, I had my glass of water that had a mineral supplement in it that I use (makes the water taste like milk) and one of the kittens kept trying to get in it. I poured some of my glass in the bowl and they all came running to the dish like I was feeding them. They lapped it up in no time flat. I figured out that they didn't want the TAP WATER. One of the kittens was 7 weeks old and the end of his tail looked dead, it had no hair on it and looked like it was about to fall off. After a week of the water and mineral supplement, his tail started to heal and grow hair. Now, you can't even tell there was anything wrong with it. I thought I was silly not to realize before that I HATE TAP WATER and will go without if it means drinking tap water, why wouldn't they be the same way? I started thinking about how cats get UTIs and I thought it was probably because peoples cats are only drinking enough to sustain life, not enough to be properly hydrated (even in humans UTIs are a sign of severe dehydration). Even though everyone else thought you were making an ad, I think this was a highly necessary post/topic. Poor cats are suffering at the hand of our ignorance. |

My cat has only ever drank Distilled Drinking Water since day one. And a lot of people agree that one of the reasons my cat is so healthy, never has issues when get goes for his check ups, is because he gets bottled, distilled or spring water. I had to give him tap water once, only once... and he sniffed it and walked away when he went for a drink. Totally agree !! |

At first he was just acting funny for a couple days about going pee. He would go allot, or at least I thought, and he also went in places hes not supposed to which is extremely rare. These are actually signs of the condition as it turns out, and a good factoid. That night he became extremely dis-comfortable, a total blockage had occurred, and I came home and found him basically shrieking in pain and fear so I flipped out and start calling Vets, they did a cathode which fixed the immediate problem but led to a week of urinalysis tests, toxicology exams, and several days the poor cat was on that tube being "flushed" or what ever. I was mortified. Thank you for this thread and this post's information. Ironic timing because I have been searching online for a LONG time to see what else I can try for my cats (I have 9 boys and 3 girls-and been through UTI's with 4 of them recently). I've spent over $300 just the last 2weeks, taking the one who currently has a bad UTI to the vet for visits, tests, medicine (wasted) and now shots every other day of medicine he will NOT take no matter HOW I try to give it to him, and he's still growling after he pees. I don't know WTF to do, but I will def stop feeding them the crap food apparently (yes, Walmart's cheap brand :( since that was all I could afford). Of course the vet bills have far superseded the cost if I had bought proper food in the fist place. Who knew? :( Now I just have to figure out how to help him STAT and what to do for the one who's still suffering, sigh. |

I did take in a wild kitten... I'll be danged, there's a Blue Buffalo commercial on TV right now!... oh, the kitten may have had Roundworms, or got them with fleas from the neuter trip. Make sure kitty is between your legs, and since you are knelt down, or sitting on your heels, he can not back up and away from you. Place left hand over his head, and gently pull up / back, this will open his mouth naturally, it has no choice but to open. With right hand throw pill in, aiming for the back of his throat, close. While keeping left hand on head, keep in up / back position, and stroke kittys throat stimulating him to swallow, which will make pill go down. Release when you are certain the pill is gone. I was a Vet Tech for 4 yrs, this method is tried and true. Dont even bother to hide it in food, it never works. They always go around it. |

Then again, I like the size and looks of Ragdolls...they have long hair, but it doesn't tangle easy, so doesn't require a lot of brushing. I'm still undecided.
