SPARKS, Okla. – A record 5.6-magnitude hit Oklahoma late Saturday night, causing "significant" damage to buildings at nearly the same position that a 4.7-magnitude quake hit less than 24 hours earlier.

The quake had been recorded at a magnitude of 5.2 but was later upgraded -- making it the strongest earthquake ever recorded in the state, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Unspecified damage to buildings located close to the quake's epicenter was reported by the Lincoln County Emergency Management department.

"Very significant damages are being reported in southern Lincoln County," the department posted on Facebook.

Better yet... let them deal with 100ºF heat for a month straight. See how those in L.A. dig that.

If you have a pet, especially a dog, watch how they react. They will tell you if there is a precuror(Spelling?) for more quake. Please, they may be your life-saving. Just adding my 2 cents worth. By the way, I live in SE Nebraska.
Be safe folk.

This is so true! I swear...my beagle must be part Indian. She can sense something miles away, and seems to be very sensitive to her sorroundings (physical and spiritual). Sometimes she doesn't walk in a certain place, but I see nothing there.

The thing with Oklahoma is the seismic engineering protocols are not even close to what they are along the west coast. I highly doubt that most new construction would even be up to code if the structures were transplanted to california.

Over here along the west, alot of changes have occured in the building codes to accomodate the new seismic rules. while we are prepared for 5.6's and wouldn't bat an eyelid, OK will have major structural deficiencies as a result of this quake.

It's all a matter of relativity. What is a medium shaker for one region, is a disaster for another.

Thread: So that was Oklahoma's largest earthquake on record.

Posted the seismographs.

That was a good 40 mins of rumble.

Nearest seismo I could find,.. Just south of Tulsa.

nice one. it does seem that there was a second smaller quake about 20 min. after but the first was still rumbling pretty good.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4696144

and it is still moving. I swear my ears can still hear that low freq.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4696144

We felt the small aftershock in Midwest City and in Choctaw I s'pose it was to small for the USGS to bother with.

My son and I are also continuing to hear and feel that low frequency. Sort of a hum/rumble is the best I can describe it. My dog keeps popping her head up like she hears something then lays back down.

I don't know if all of this means anything but for us it is surely unusual.

Also, thank you for the seismo link.

Yep. also has to do with geology of the area. Make up of rock etc. That's is why they are felt more widely in the east than the west.

Oklahoma earthquake felt in Fort Worth

" Central Oklahoma was shaken with a 5.6-magnitude earthquake that was felt in Fort Worth late Saturday. It was the sixth quake of the day in Oklahoma and the second to shake a multistate area that included North Texas. "

I have a question, I'm really freaked out now. I live in North Eastern Ohio, and heard this loud rumbling, like some growling sound...it was so loud a couple hours ago, what the heck was that????!!! I thought at first it was thunder? We have completely clear skies and frost here.

50 miles south of KCMO here, we felt a mild shaking for 20 sec or so. Weird thing was about 1 min before I had a sudden onset headache and mild nausea that lasted about 1 min or so and then disappeared.

With a quake with a mag of 5.6 expect aftershocks of mag 4.0-2.0 range.....if nothing in that range has happened yet I would hold on might be a foreshock for a larger quake.

Lets keep an eye on this...stay safe.

USGS: 5.6 magnitude quake rattles Oklahoma

(AP) – 1 hour ago

SPARKS, Okla. (AP) — One of the strongest earthquakes in state history rocked central Oklahoma late Saturday night, a 5.6 magnitude temblor that rattled a college football stadium 50 miles away and sent shudders through buildings and homes in distant communities and cities. Emergency authorities had no immediate reports of injuries but one county's sheriff's office said it was responding to numerous calls and checking for any damages.

The quake could prove the most powerful on state record if the 5.6 reading reported by the U.S. Geological Survey stands. The seismic monitoring agency said the quake struck at 10:53 p.m. local time Saturday (0353 GMT) and was centered about 44 mile east-northeast of Oklahoma City. It had initially reported the temblor as a 5.2 magnitude quake.

It said the quake struck near the community of Sparks — in eastern Oklahoma between Oklahoma City and Tulsa. The temblor shook the stadium at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater near the end of the school's football game with Kansas State.

The quake was one of several to rattle the state Saturday, including a magnitude 4.7 earthquake that shook the same area early Saturday.

Wow! I wondered why my ears were ringing so bad today. They haven't rang this bad in about 7 months (I was anemic then, but I'm not now). It's a very high pitched ringing too - like electronic equipment gives off. Come to think of it, I think I was having it slightly yesterday as well. Anyone else's ears ringing more than usual today or yesterday?

BTW... I am in Minnesota.

So people are saying EQ has been felt in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, and Pennsylvania...

So it somehow managed to completely bypass myself and my friends in the states of Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee and get felt in Penn???

I'll believe the first 4 but I don't buy the Penn people claiming to have felt it.
